Octavia MK3 Ride Hight

Featured Replies

HI All

I have recently purchased a 2019 Octavia  SEL with the 1.5 TSI Act Engine. Currently it is on some option 18" wheels   which i will be swapping back to 17".  to me the car is looking quite high with a large arch gap between the top of the tyre and  arch.

I have measures the floor to top of the arch gap on all for corners as below

Front

Left  680MM Right 685MM

Rear

Left 690mm Right 670MM

The car has done around 28'000 miles. now the 5mm at the front I'm not concerned about as that is hardly noticeable and probably down to how the engine is weighted. but the 20mm difference at the back is a little concerning

Where can i find the dimensions for the floor to Wheel arch measurements if they are publish as stock? i gather there are a multitude of springs for the car. Does anyone know the part number for what shoudl be the stock spring for the car? so that I can cross reference.

I have got the workshop  manuals off erwin but that doesn't seem to give me parts information  from what i could see.

the car  from the build sheet doesn't have under body protection called out that i can see  but unsure if the previous owner did anything to it as the arch gap looks more like a scout than normal Octavia.

any help would be appreciated.

I will look to get the car up on a ramp soon to have a good look at the underside.

Are the tyres the size they should be ? .It could be that former owner fitted 45 or less profile tyres when it should have 55's.

Both my previous 1.4 Elegance estate and current 1.8 L&K hatch have 225/40x17 tyres on 17" wheels.

That is quite a lot of difference assuming it is parked on a perfectly flat surface. edit: 28k miles only as well!!

The dimensions are in the suspension setting workshop manual available in Erwin. Published as height from centre of wheel hub to top of arch. I have these for the Mk7 Golf but not Mk3 Oct.

Are you sure a spring is not missing a coil. A heavy driver and passenger behind.  Or a replacement spring that is a different spec is installed. If they are genuine they have up to 3 colour bands. There are lots and lots of variants when manufactured based on suspension PR code (spec) car built with.

You can look up on etka a full listing of available parts,  but I suspect you will need to know the suspension PR code car built with  to narrow the part - there will be a choice of many parts for the mk3 platform.

I think that's very unlikely, as no one makes 225/40R17.

Are you sure they're not 225/45R17?

when i look at the options catalogue the tire sizes currently on the car match what could of been purchased from factory. the 17 in wheels  are genuine Skoda wheels and tyres  in the correct spec as are the 18ins on the car.

with all wheels matching that still doesn't account for the  20MM different Side to side at the rear of the estate.

thanks that really useful il  have a look in the workshop manual and see what i can find.

I have the original spec list so that will show what  the car left the factory with and then need to cross reference with what is on the car.

I have a feeling it will be a lot of cross referencing to work out the springs based on a colour code. hopefully the springs still have a part number on them and not just a sticker that could of worn off.

Suspension height measurements should be taken from the centre of the wheel to the wheelarch, not from the road.

Is your car a 2019 Octavia MK3 1.5TSI DSG hatchback?

Front springs will usually be softer for a manual gearbox car, and rear springs will usually be harder for an estate. If the car has a factory fitted towbar, the rear springs will be harder still.

Maybe one of your rear coil springs is broken?

Or maybe someone has replaced one of the rear springs with the wrong spring?

Anyhow, 20mm is a lot. If you can see the different height on each side of the car by eye, then that is too much.

Are you measuring with the car empty, or have you got some luggage in the car?

As you can see in the chart below, there is a long list of possible front springs on the Octavia MK3. Which ones you have depends on the build code for the front springs. For example, build code L01 would mean you have the 5Q0411105GF.

As you can see in the chart below, there is a long list of possible rear springs on the Octavia MK3. Which ones you have depends on the build codes for the rear springs. For example, build codes 1JA and 0YA would mean yuo have 5Q0511121A.

that is a lot of different spring types 😲

Mine is as follows

2019 Octavia MK3 1.5TSI DSG Estate SEL

I did the measurements with the car empty and nothing heavy in the boot other than the spare wheel along with a full tank of fuel.

No signs of a towbar ever being fitted

I will have a look at the labels to see what  was installed  and then start the cross referencing process

Can you put all you build codes up on this thread?

There might be around 180 of them, so there are a lot.

Kilen springs suggest that you might have 5Q0411105GH front springs and 5Q0511121AF rear springs. This is likely to be close to what you have or exactly what you have, if you have an Octavia MK3 1.5TSI 150HP 2WD DSG estate without factory fitted towbar, and with standard ride height.

I would probably go for Kilen 63140 rear springs to replace 5Q0511121AF, which you can get on ebay for less than £30 each including postage. Kilen are made in a modern factory in Sweden, and are Europe's biggest manufacturer of aftermarket car springs. Kilen and Lesjofors are the same spring just marketed under two different brand names. In the UK, Kilen is far more common and cheaper than Lesjofors, but in many EU countries Lesjofors seems to be the predominant brand.

Make sure you replace both sides at the same time.

Awesome thanks for your help that gives me a lot more to go on

I'm hoping that i have a miss matched set of rear springs  currently that would account for the different in Hight or someone has just replaced one rather than both if there had been a snapped one.

Hopefully the weekend will be good weather for me to have a look at the car.

When you get the new springs, make sure you check they are what you ordered.

So often people fit springs without checking they are correct.

You don't want to fit them and then find that the car is too high or too low, when it's so easy to check them before fitting.

It's also important to make sure they are a matching pair. You don't want to fit one spring that is 10mm or 20mm longer than the other spring.

Online sellers get a lot of returns, and it's quite common for springs to be put back in the wrong box.

The first check I do, is to weigh them on digital kitchen scales. If those rear springs are not between 1.7kg and 1.8kg alarm bells should ring. But also check most of the other specifications including length, wire diameter (use digital calipers to measure this), and number of coil turns.

Specification of 5Q0511121AF rear springs

Uncompressed length 341mm

Wire diameter 11.25mm

Outside diameter 109mm

Number of coil turns 7.6

Weight 1.75kg

Actual photo of 5Q0511121AF rear spring (notice that the number of coil turns is about 7.6)

I think that's very unlikely, as no one makes 225/40R17.

Are you sure they're not 225/45R17?

Neither, just been out to check they're 225/40R18.

so quick update i've managed to have a look under the back of the car and looking at the springs on the rear are a pair of 5Q0511121AF  so at least it is defiantly standard suspension that hasn't been messed with.

I will  pop the set of Hawk alloys on it and see what the high reverts back to as these have the same size  as the factory  TRIUS rims with the same size as fitted hopefully things will look more normal with those on and look better

Thanks Carlston for all your help earlier today

Sorry to revive an old thread rather than starting a new one, but I’ve just noticed something similar and wanted to see if anyone else has come across it.

On mine the front gaps aren’t the usual ~5mm difference mentioned earlier – they’re closer to 12mm, which feels a bit unusual. I honestly never noticed when it started, but I’m fairly sure when the shocks/dampers and coil springs were replaced there wasn’t any noticeable gap difference at that time.

N.B: Measurement was taken in a multistorey car park to ensure a level surface. Tyre pressures are the same on both fronts, tread depth is very similar, and both tyres are the same size (225/45 R17).

Has anyone else experienced this, or is my car just being quirky?
