Propane Fumigation

Featured Replies

Well it's been fitted. No pics today sorry due to running out of time and my car is pretty filthy.

It's been fitted by PI Fuel Systems, based in Liss.

Had a minor setback with a part arriving at 1600 on the Tuesday (two-day fitting exercise). I left at 2200 in the end.

The system is similar to, but not identical to, the one Jason is fitting to his car. His I believe is the Powershot 2000, mine is the Powershot.

I've asked about the differences a little and apparently the Powershot system is the UK baed development, whereas Powershot 2000 is the US one. Beyond that the '2000' system works off boost pressure, whilst the UK version is only driven by air taken into the engine.

This causes a difference in the way the poewr is delivered. The UK one is less all-or-nothing, whereas the US one probably allows (much?) higher peak boost.

As far as the fitting goes, I will try to post up some picks eventually but at the moment there is a tank in the spare wheel location, the filler is roughly in the same spot as on Jasons car - check out his vid :)

The system itself is fitted kinda below the airbox area, slightly to the left of it as seen from the front of the car. From what I understand it's secured to the firewall, will try to get some pics though.

My system has been set VERY mild both on where it cuts in, and how much gas is flowed, as I'm off to NL for a couple of weeks on Monday and I didn't fancy risking errors with the car.

There is a notable difference in performance already however. Kinda glad I've got that uprated clutch.

One of the other things is the smoke - there did appear to be a little but the temperatures today don't really make it possible to work out whether it's the gas or not. The gas did seems to smooth the power delivery some more.

Also fuel economy appeared a little better but I want to run it for a while first to make up my mind.on that.

I've got a little control on/off unit with LEDs to indicate gas is flowing (or not), unit on/off and the gas level (roughly).

Next thing to do is get the boost gauge fitted so I can work out how safe the boost level(s) are when cruising and under load.

Is it worth the money ? Hard to say. It's a LOT of money BUT it works for definite. A remap is definitely a LOT cheaper. Nitrous would be faster but it tends to be more destructive.

I'm pretty sure the '2000' would provide ultimately more power, but so far I'm happy with the UK system

Long post I know & sorry about the lack of pics so far.

Would be excellent to get Jason's car up and running on the gas too :D

Im sure when it's fully tinkered with and you've got CC2/3 it'll be even better!

Hmmm - I'm curious about the "air going into the engine" - I would have thought that was essentially the same as boost as when boost goes up its pushing more air in?

Good to see you got done in 2 days, whereas I'm still faffing about with a broken boost tap, so the powershot 2000 regulator can't work. Just curious how/what/where the measure is taken for the air into the engine? If its a tap in to the inlet manifold to measure the air pressure, then that is using the boost. My mind boggles how else it could measure something to regulate the lpg.

Oh, and for getting there before me! :finger::mad: :grumpy: ;)

I couldn't help it :o :P

I'm pretty sure it must work off boost to some extent, but I'll have to compare notes/pics when I get to see yours :D

It's basically a venturi-based system, and it sure looks similar. From my (very limited) understanding the '2000' taps into the boost pipe as well? Hell I dunno :o

Will try to find out a bit more, hoping to get some pics done Saturday as I won't have much time before that (site visits etc).

Tank fits in very nicely.

BTW where can you buy emergency tyre repair stuff, not really looked for it but would a petrol station sell it?

Halfrauds will stock it.

Simple answer is breakdown cover - get a puncture, get towed.

You may well want to look into some of the products that they fill your tyre with to prevent punctures. Very big in the SMART world as they have no spare.

Venturi(?) Makes it sound like a mini-MAF?

IIRC it's just some kinda nozzle thing - I have a few pics on my mobile (not the clearest due to lack of light). I've sent them through to Stu, if they're good enough he may repost them here, if not I'll make some proper snapshots with my camera instead on Saturday :)

Mine does tap off boost, yup. The boost pressure pipe comes in from straight under the regulator, wirh fuel coming out the left. So something inside the regulator is being moved by the boost, allowing adjustable lpg injection rate. :)

Looking foward to some pics. Looks like mine won't be up this weekend as Allards are snowed under with work and can't do my race pipe (with needed boost tap) until next week. :(

Afraid none of the pics were good enough to post up.

Didn't think they would be, not enough light and the camera is not exactly great either. Will try to bring my proper camera along tomorrow or if someone is dead-keen to see the pics, PM me your mobile number and I'll try to send it through

Hi,

Are you going to put it on rolling road?

Also, how about a vide of the exhaust please.

John
