Yea it’s another MPG post 🤨😉

Featured Replies

My Octavia 3 1.0 tsi is getting around 40mpg around town/city driving and about 44mpg on motorway runs.
Is it me or is the fuel gauge on this car designed in a way where you can actually see the gauge move slightly? 🤨 I think my mpg is way off what I should be getting after reading through the forums!  Or am I paranoid after owning a Megane 3 1.5 dci that returned an amazing 60mpg? Or is something else going on like injector leaking or some other fuel issue, and by the way I’m using E5 right now. Thanks

Is that the indicated MPG on the dash, or have you ever brimmed it and driven 40 miles in town / city with a few stops and cold starts and see how many litres to brim it again?

If you were to fill / brim it and do 450 miles on longer runs does it just take 45 litres or so to brim it again?

Are you using the cheapest E5 from Tesco or Sainsbury as it will be just as good as the others if they are costing more?

I have brimmed the tank and will post result when nearly empty. Also its Sainsbury’s e5. MPG figures do seem really low to what they’re actually advertised even though the claimed mpg is very liberal at best.

Have you had it long and since before the colder weather and shorter days.  More headlights, heated mirrors, rear screen and heating time.

Your high idle speed on start up from the other thread kind of indicate colder ambient temps and your starts.

How many miles has the car done?

Hopefully not a GPF cleaning issue from lots of short trips.  But if you are getting 40 mpg around town then that is pretty good.

Hi @aliveandflipping89, no you are not being paranoid, 40mpg around town (as Toot confirms) is ok, but 45mpg on a motorway is way short of expectations, even in winter.

I had a similar consumption experience on a UK visit about eight years back in a manual 1.0tsi Focus loaned to me by a relative. Relatively new car, low mileage, great drive and performance was fine, it averaged 40mpg but for some reason it seemed impossible to improve consumption over 45mpg no matter the conditions (hot summer).

At the time extensive roadworks on the local A12 dual carriageways meant long 50mph restricted zones which in off-peak periods should have displayed figures (based on my 1.4tsi Octavia in Australia) closer to 70mpg than 40mpg . It was a major disappointment as the engine had won a couple of concurrent international 'engine of the year' awards but I had no basis for comparison to know if it was (a)typical of the breed or not.

As @toot  suggested some more information about the car, its maintenance and driving history is useful for others to assist you.

Record a couple of refuel quantities to see how it compares to 'Since refuel' average consumption to get a feel for display accuracy.

Is it a manual or dsg automatic? Should not make much difference to consumption assuming an automatic is behaving correctly.

What 'mode' (Sport, Normal, Eco) do you normally drive in? Again not a big consumption factor but each mode has its own characteristics.

Tyre pressures? I use about 38psi all round on 17 inch tyres, which for me (may not be for everyone though) is optimal for consumption, ride, and tyre wear

Is servicing annual or on a 'needs' basis and when was it last serviced?

Have you raised the consumption issue with the dealers while under warranty and have they scanned for possible sensor or other relevant faults? Dealers tend to be dismissive of consumption complaints, usually blaming the owner, but as you were getting really good consumption in your previous diesel Megane that, for me, is obviously not the case.

Modern small petrol engines can be incredibly efficient but far more complex and less tolerant of any problems.

The cheap and easy things are air filters and tyre pressures, I'd add spark plugs to the list but even these have to be installed to ensure a correct orientation relative to the injectors, this came from an informative Skoda Master Tech who used to frequent the Forum .

Last question and a bit personal, but are you really 89? If so then  , it is really quite inspirational!

Thanks for you replies. It’s a 2020 1.0 tsi manual with full Skoda history with just under 33k.

Well this morning I inspected the air filter and it was absolutely filthy! And it’s obviously the original filter. I changed this myself and after a run got an instant increase in MPG. The air filter change intervals on these seem far to high in my opinion. Oh and I’m not 89 it’s the year I was born 😃 and I did raise the poor MPG with Skoda and got the usual must be your driving style and not DTCs are logged etc etc. You’d think inspecting the air filter would be a basic check and I’m 100% going to be raising this with the service department at my local dealer.
Once again thank you all for your comments and input 🤙🏻👌🏻

Additional info

The Air filter at 6 years is ridiculous, but that is a guideline.  Checked at services is what they should be.  Even given a shake, a vacuum or  blow through.   Someone in Germany has no idea where the cars are used.   Even the 4 year spark plug change or at 40,000 miles is guidance.  The 3 cylinder engine like yours might have a plug going already at 33,000 miles.   Then there was a injector issue.  Just sons cars, a TPI not a recall.    Ps raise all you like with Service Staff.  They are there full time and the same old same old goes on. The Air filters used to be at the 2nd Major Service which was 4 years / 40,000 miles and on the fixed price and the tech / filter might just decided not required and not even look.

Yep I completely agree and the filter was absolutely dirty to say the least and a new genuine filter has certainly improved my mpg substantially, cheers
