Water drip from RHS of Front Reg plate - Long time after rain shower - Scala normal oddity?!

Featured Replies

Hi All,

2 months into 1st Skoda ownership - got my 1st water leak 🤔

I drove the car on Friday, and parked up on driveway.  Lots of rain on Saturday, dry today on Sunday.

So, many hours later after rain - driveway and roads all dry now by 2pm Sunday - And I notice a constant water drip, from RHS of Front Reg plate.  See below screenshot.

Literally every 15 seconds approx, another drip.

As per below screenshot, the paving below the car is damp.  Rest of the driveway is dry.

I felt and smelt the drip - its is not sweet and viscous like coolant etc.  Feels like water.

I upped the bonnet and check the fluids - all ok.  Topped the windscreen water - not much to add at all after 2 months driving in rain.

...Soo......

I moved the car to the end of the close.  Parked up for a bit, and checked - the drip has now gone.

Spirit level - For both locations:

Width ways   - I checked with Spirit level - and the car is 0% dead level on the Reg plate. (Spirit level from iPhone.)

Length ways - I did NOT check this - I'm not sure how to on the car!  Perhaps the locations are; Downhill on driveway, and level - when parking out on road?

Is this a normal oddity of the Scala?  I.e. Rain water collects in the body panels - and if car not on level ground - drips out of the front right!?

What do I do?:

The coming week is forecast as dry.  If this water drips goes away - Do I just leave it?!

Or is this something to take back to the dealer to check out regardless?

I take it I don't need to checked ASAP - as I say all the fluids levels under the bonnet were fine etc.

Hope you can advise

Regards

Martin

Hi All,

The Missus found a good link, covering all leaking liquids in the car:

Guessing my original assessment was right

https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/know-how/car-leaking-how-to-identify-liquid-dripping-from-your-car-and-what-to-do/

With regards to our Scala though, hoping you guys can advise from your experience with the model.

I.e.

1.  Is this area of drips a known issue with the Scala?

E.g. Is this a common Issue with panel shaping, that happily collects rain water and drips it out in an unsightly way at the front.

2.  Any other rain issues with the Scala?

E.g. I have also noticed rain water when I open the 4 doors.  The water collects on the metal body, before you get into the car, but doesn't drip into the cabin thank goodness.  My old golf never had this.

3.  What do I do about this specific front dripping?

It is not a good look to our 1st Skoda car.  At the 1st glance from anyone, it looks like something is really wrong with the car!

Besides this, we really like the car to bits 😀

Kind regards

Martin

Well I haven't noticed that on my Scala but it seems to deposit water drips randomly after rain. Looking at your picture my guess would be that water is collected on the grill area that slowly works its way down between the number plate and the body work to emerge later. I wouldn't worry about it, probably the same thing would happen if you used a hose pipe on the car! Yes got the water ingress between the outer door panel and the body work as well but it seems to drain away somehow. Again its a 'feature' and the you have the body corrosion warranty anyhow but I doubt if its worth stressing about. Finally like you I love the car (apart from the non reclining front passenger seat 🤬) Enjoy it!

thanks Jon for the sanity check! 🙂

I think I can live with that. I did say when I bought the Scala that I will be less precious about the car, totally unlike the golf GTi, where I  didn’t really enjoy it that much when it was pristine. Concerned about getting its first dint Etc.

It’s a collection of water on top of the black grill trim what has a tiny lip I won’t worry about it. Where it’s dripping from is all plastic. radiators and windscreen washer bottle are set back

Martin, out of interest what model and engine is it?

thanks, 1982,

That’s exactly the kind of technical know-how, I was after!

Cool, will enjoy the car with a clear conscience then 🙂

phew!

I thought you were going to say, there was a known issue with that engine model, loose secondary coolant tube, flapping at the front, et cetera et cetera 🙂

Thanks, great car, really like it! Hope you have a nice bank holiday
