Sorry, a tyre query

Featured Replies

I’m sure this is buried in all the previous posts …….

19” wheels are giving the OP a base line ride condition. Which seems unsatisfactory.

Different brands of rubber may or may not provide a discernible difference in ride. But a costly path.

I use 17” winter tyres in place of my 19” summer tyres (Kodiaq) and I’ve proven to my satisfaction that  there is a very discernible difference in the ride comfort between the 17 and 19 tyres.

All down primarily to the difference in the height of the sidewall, combined with the difference in tyre width.

The overall diameters are close.

I agree with your comments, but just to add...

The Kodiaq's 235/50R19 is a far more comfortable tyre size than the Karoq's 225/40R19. The easiest way to understand this is to compare the sidewall heights. The 235/50R19 sidewall height is about 30% more than the 225/40R19 sidewall height, and a 30% increase in sidewall height is a lot...especially when the 225/40R19 sidewall height is only about 3.5" (90mm). By comparison, the 235/50R19 sidewall height is over 4.5" (117.5mm).

235/55R18 has a sidewall height of about 5" (129.25mm), and 215/65R17 has a sidewall height of about 5.5" (139.75mm).

Out of the standard Karoq 2WD tyre sizes, the 215/55R17 would provide similar ride comfort to the Kodiaq's 235/50R19 tyre size. There's less than 1% difference between these two sidewall heights.

You’re referring to the 235/50/R19 as a Kodiaq size. Would that size tyre fit my OEM Karoq rims? Am sorry that this is probably so straightforward for many to understand, but I am just so confused.

Thank you everyone for your patience

You can't use Kodiaq sized tyres on the Karoq, because the outside diameter is too big.

Comfort comparison of 19" Karoq tyres and 19" Kodiaq tyres

19" Karoq tyres = uncomfortable (due to low 3.5" sidewall height)

19" Kodiaq tyres = comfortable (due to high 4.5" sidewall height)

In simple terms, appropriate 18” or 17” wheels with higher profile tyres (more sidewall) will probably give you a more comfortable ride.

Correct choice will be a tyre almost exactly the same OD as the original so speedo will stay within acceptable reading.

I enjoy active suspension that allows me to ring the changes with different wheels. I jokingly refer to Soft setting on small wheels being like a ship in a storm compared with Hard on low profile tyres .

235/50 R19 is too big for a Karoq

4x4 versions (with their raised ground clearances) can take slightly bigger tyre than the 2wd versions, but not as big as you are suggesting.

This is official Skoda wheels catalogue, as you will see Karoq rims are 16, 17, 18, 19 inch, if you want comfort go for lower sizes, (and tyres will be much cheaper in those common sizes).  But of course, don't have to have Skoda wheels, could fit alternatives if you can get good deal.

Now this is probably going to be a very stupid question but rather than fit smaller wheels what is stopping me fitting full size tyres to the existing rims? Is it simply a question of there not being space, or the rims aren’t designed to accommodate any other tyres but the OEM low profiles?

You hit the nail on the head.

It's not difficult to understand. If you wish to keep the current alloys then as per my earlier reply, you can change the type of tyre but keep the same size  i.e. an all weather tyre, which is softer. How much of a difference that'll make on a 225/40/19 is the question. In my experience the cost didn't justify the ride benefits. At least they're better the few days a year I get snow.

Your only other option would be to buy new ( smaller ) alloys and tyres which will improve both comfort and noise levels.
