Light Assist Package

Featured Replies

I have a new SEL on order. I had included the Light Package to enable the matrix lights with adjustment for European driving and also having the automatic high beam dip. However the more I read of the matrix system the more I wonder if I'm not better sticking with the normal LED lights, dropping the light level with infotainment screen menu and manually dipping the lights. My previous 12 year old MB had these features and they worked perfectly Any views on this?

What are your main reservations about the matrix LED’s?

I have them on my Karoq and must admit after being somewhat sceptical about them they’ve been a revelation in terms of light output and how seamlessly they’ve worked.

I think it was mainly reading on this forum from various posts that the autodip worked haphazardly and the quality of the lights was not as good as the standard LED's. If autodip cannot be relied upon then It's not worth having!

I can’t (to date at least) fault them, I’ve never been flashed by oncoming traffic so can only presume it’s working as intended.

I was originally about to place an order for an SEL but when I discovered I could get a SportLine for a comparable price with the added extras, including the LED light pack, which if I remember correctly was an almost £2000 extra with the SEL so I went with the SportLine. One of the things that surprised me with the SEL was that all of the internal lighting was still filament bulbs, not a dealbreaker in itself but surprising on a brand new 2023 car.

Well that's good to hear. My objection to the sportline was being forced into 19" wheels; I thought the 18" ones on the SEL were going to be bad enough! Agree with you regarding non-LED's inside the car - at least LED external!

Yeah the 19” wheels were a bit of a sticking point for me initially and tried the get the dealer to put it on 18” wheels but they were having none of it unfortunately 😂

That said I’ve been surprised by how comfortable the 19” have been, it’s all rather subjective to a degree but they’re not nearly as bad as I was expecting, almost dreading!

I would echo the positive views on here with regard to the Light Assist Package.  They're just amazing and never had a problem.  i also changed the setting with OBD11 so that it remembers the last setting rather than having to activate them every time the ignition is turned on.

What exactly needs resetting? Are you talking about the auto dip function?

Headlight Assist is activated by pushing the headlight/indicator stalk forward until you feel a resistance (a dipped headlight symbol appears in the instrument display to show that it is activated).  When the ignition is turned off, the the system is reset to off by default.  It has to be activated every time the ignition is turned on.  The OBD11 change means that the car will remember the last setting when the ignition is turned off, so I leave mine on permanently.

I am disappointed by the matrix LED lights on my 2022 Karoq. Initially I was excited by the idea of having a shadow cone only on the cars, but real life usage proves to be hard for Skoda to implement this. Most of my driving was in Romania and so far I’ve found myself switching manually more often than using the auto dipping functions. What I don’t like:

  • when driving on the highway with anti blinding fittings between the lanes, the matrix lights constantly blind lory drivers, also they have trouble with cars in front of you when switching lanes
  • In Romania small bridges are marked with reflective red indicators, one at each end of the bridge edge, somehow my Karoq always confuses this bridges with the rear lights of a car and makes a shadow on the railing (this also happens on the highway with reflective indicators on the railing if one of the indicators is missing and distance between them is bigger than standard) this can be very dangerous on narrow roads.
  • when driving on poor roads with a lot of pot holes, every time I reduce the speed to avoid a hole, even if its pitch black, it dips to low beams.
  • the quality of the LED is noticeably worst than standard, also there is a visible transition line from where the low beam illuminates and the high beam illuminates, I find it distracting.

Well your experience seems quite a damning report on these lights. My previous Mercedes that was 12 years old operated absolutely faultlessly in such situations. You imply that you would rather have had the non-matrix LED lighting. This really concerns me as to whether to go for the Lights Assist package or not!

Anybody else experienced similar problems with the matrix lights?

Have this matrix system on a 2022 Kodiaq in the UK and really, really like it.  From my experience I can see why Psicho would have a problem with the road conditions and layouts described, however in the UK I'd lay dowbn the money for matrix again tomorrow without a second thought.

I have the Edition version, which I assume has the lght assist package (it has LED matrix headlights and auto-dip function, and it behaves almost perfectly. The only issue is that is is sometimes a little slow to respond to cars coming in the other direction. I would recommend it.

EDIT. And remember that the lights can be reset for driving on the right, so no keadlight sticker nonsence.

I was driving on an unlit motorway last night. I wasn’t impressed with the matrix light’s constant changing and leaving a black square area beyond the beam. I found it irritating and distracting. Maybe I am not using them correctly.

Forgot to mention I was driving my wife’s 2023 Sportline not my 2020 Edition!

Love the matrix headlights. Had them on my Octavia and it was a deal breaker for the Karoq which is why I've got the Sportline. I think the Karoq matrix headlights work just as well as the Octavia. I have no issue with them at all and wouldn't go back.

Unless it's a particularly quiet motorway, I prefer to turn off the matrix function and generally just drive with dipped headlights.

According to the owners manual, “ the system function can be restricted in unfavourable weather conditions “ . I presume fog snow etc could confuse the camera.

I believe it's probably less about confusing the system and more about fog, rain, snow etc. scattering light and dazzling other road users.  i.e. light going where it's not supposed to with the system in operation.
