Not as on my wife's 2015 1.2TSI 90 hatch.  Engine bay gives lots of different noises at different times but I think that's the computer programs doing their thing (interfering) often.

What is the history of the car, how many engine oil & filter changes, spark plugs, engine air filter, and any much more important work on brakes, steering  and suspension, all three include tyres.

How many miles on the engine?

Are you sure it's not wheel bearing or tyre noise?  Have you checked the tyres?

Is the noise only at the revs the turbo would be active?

Are you sure it's not exhaust, has the exhaust or car been chav'd /"improved" at all?

Exhaust shield loose?

Can you do a video / audio of the noise?

That's me out of ideas.

Had mine for two years, same model, and the sound levels are average.  I had a1.6 TDI before this one and both cars were fairly quiet. Definitely no throaty sound.

22k-miles in 6 years is low overall mileage which isn't always the very good thing some think it is, obviously it depends and I've no idea it could make your car marvellous.

Lower mileage can often be more wear on some aspects of the car than higher mileage thus needing more servicing and maintenance and not less as many think but again I can't know with your car and 22k-miles isn't much unless the car has had a owners or users that are very hard on cars.

I can think of no good reason why your 110 should much louder than my wife's 90 and even with poor insulation it wouldn't be enormously loud I'd guess, at least to me as my last car was very old and noisy and without soundproofing (but I did later put on sound deadening pads).

Record the sound also with the bonnet up and inside the cabin with and without bonnet up.

Comparing with another same model is a good idea but I don't think it's necessary as I'm not a VW fan and often moan about the engine bay noises but I'd never say the engine and cabin noises are bad if anything they're pretty good.

What gearbox do you have?

Have you got the rear seats down and parcel shelf out?

You could check to see if it's missed any (admitted) Recalls here. - https://www.skoda-auto.com/services/recall-campaigns

Perhaps ring the local Skoda Dealer and see if there are any more secretive items they check for your particular VIN.

If you've been in an old van or lorry with the engine in the cabin you'd certainly know what loud is. 😄

My wife has an August 2015 VW Polo 1.2TSI 110PS 6MT which I tend to drive most of the time, it has 44K miles on it from new and I've never thought that it was noisy, just normal - if that means anything.

Would the VW Polo because it carries the name badge have additional noise insulation as they never worry too much about their name badge cars' weights?

I'd think that the more expensive models/version will have some more sound insulation, but I've no idea if that applies or if it does, just how much it applies to Polo - Fabia - Ibiza, SEAT certainly used to have less sound insulation in their cars when compared to VW in this size of car, at least on the trim level of SEAT Ibiza we used to have in the family.

Across the VW Group brands, there does seem to a variance in power train mounting "bush" part numbers.

Maybe someone has modified the car, even had a Remap & not put back to factory standard / reset. Sellers don't.

Maybe the exhaust.

Maybe there is a 'Performance air filter' in the Air Filter Housing.  Maybe a dirty one.  Check.

Lots of maybes.

Has the car got a fuel service history and are the spark plugs replace yet?

Is it getting the Cam Belt replaced, or was that done already?

Does your car have the 3 'Organ pipes' for 'much sportiness / noise'  harmonics / balance or why ever they are there?

I remember comments back a few years on them.

Like these?

can belt was done at start of year that was before I bought the car.

Check all the engine mountings especially the one removed to replace the cam belt, also check that the lower engine torque reaction "dogbone" void bushes have not been replaced with a solid or polyurethane version.

3 cylinder engines always sound growly on cam, rather like a highly tuned V6, this is usually reflected noise in the intake tract, you would not normally hear it through a standard exhaust with a turbo, catastrophic convertor, particulate filter etc.

Is the acoustic engine cover perhaps missing?

@J.R.But it is a 4 cylinder 1.2 TSI Euro 6 engine.

Touché!

You are to blame with your 3 organ pipes comment!

How can a 4 cylinder engine have a 3 organ pipe intake tract?

Not the actual intake before the airbox or filter.

AF.webp

I cant see anything resembling 3 (or any number of) organ pipes.

@J.R.Sorry then it is down to my poor description then or your eyesight.

They are the 3 cylindrical things facing towards the left hand side of that picture, part of the turbo inlet piping from the air cleaner.

The only acoustic engine cover thing or just dress engine cover, is only available from Aliexpress at very little cost, VW Group did not consider fitting it to these engines at the factory, so saved £5 or so - or £50 to the owner.

Thanks for that, I can see them now after enlarging the picture and knowing now where to look.

What exactly do they do as they cannot be open to the filtered air, they wont have been put there to look good, before I could see them I thought they might be like the dummy "abdo" like intake tracts moulded into some of the engine covers.

These must have a purpose, possibly to reduce reflected resonant type intake noise like you get with Weber DCOE's which can cause fuel stand off.

I think Toot may be onto something, perhaps the OP can confirm if he car is equipped with these and whether they are unobstructed i.e. not in contact with other parts?

re 3 pipes.   The thread is someplace regarding them and the purpose.

My photographic memory is going, but i will use a search engine.
