Upgrading Bolero Radio in Octavia Mk2

Featured Replies

My Octavia Mk2 has no DAB receiver. I'm just wondering how much aggro would be involved in changing the Bolero for something that would be a plug-in replacement.

The trim around the Bolero is curved and radios tend to be rectangular. Can. you just lever off the bezel, for a start?

Then, is there more involved than reconnecting the Power in, RF in from the antenna and a (universal?) connector for the speakers. I don't need any other stuff; SatNav works fine with Ways or Google Maps and the all round viz of the car is so good that parking aids or cameras are not worth the hundreds of quid that the fitting services want.

The existing FM antenna bandwidth may not be suitable so it may need a window antenna.

Morning mate,,

not done this but I too am thinking about changing to an android system. You can buy new facias to suit the mk2 and I think the surround just pops off and a few screws to release the radio,, add a dab Ariel would a bit of a faff routing wire to window but doable,, some people buy off AliExpress I’ve had some bits off there and I can’t complain them,, pretty sure they’ll do a radio and all the surround cheapish,, wiring the radio would mean splicing or making a loom to fit the new radio,, I’ll do a loom just so I can easily go back to the bolero if needed,, you may even be able to buy a loom to fit the car but not to sure ??

Depends what android radio you are buying. I have bought one a month ago from fleabay and for 118gbp it came with canbus box, wiring loom adapter ( all plug and play), aerial adapter , fascia adapter and all else needed. What I don't have is DAB but that generally is added via a USB DAB receiver to these radios.

The install is about 10-15 min if you have all the tools that are needed ( torx screwdriver and some plastic levers ).

Cheers for the opinions and information, guys. It puts me in the picture about likely effort involved . I use an iPhone for most of my non-driving activity and I remember, several years ago, trying to make Android and iOS systems get along and it was hard work and not worth it for what I wanted (a cheap smart phone) at the time.

I can do stuff hands free with my iPhone on a holder and the extras that a super intelligent receiver seem hardly worth it, unless the next car I buy has something already fitted.

I imagine that a USB DAB receiver would need to use the existing car radio but it doesn't seem likely that the Bolero would provide the necessary User Interface. (?)

I'll watch this space then.   🙂

The only thing you could get worth it out of an android radio with wireless carplay ( mine has it) is a huge sat nav with music streamed from your phone but the audio quality is just as much as your speakers can offer. I have paid the 118gbp just for the huge satnav ( 9 inch screen) and streaming music from my phone but that might not be as appealing to you. In terms of connection between the phone and the radio, it is wireless and seamless in under 40 seconds since I start the car.

Hope it helps 🙂
