Octavia Scout (2008) 2.OTDI (BMM) no dash lights, no start, no diagnostic communication after engine swap

Featured Replies

I'm hoping the collective brains of this forum can help with a problem.

My Scout started to pressurise the cooling system so either head gasket or EGR cooler issue. As the car has over 300k miles decided the  best option was to replace the engine (like for like (BMM for BMM) Managed to find an engine with lower mileage for a reasonable price and swapped them over (reading as much as I could that ECU would be okay with a like for like swap.)

All went well given trying to shoehorn a quart into a pint pot! Started the car and ran smoothly for about 10 minutes then stopped - no lights on dash, no cranking,, no communication with diagnostics (Engine, ABS or any other module)! Lights work, Radio works, Windows work, Locks & Unlocks with key buttons. The battery is quite new and fully charged. Fuses by battery & inside car checked - all fine.

Has anyone got any idea what the cause is and where I go from here? Any help appreciated

Check under-bonnet fuse 24 (5 Amp) and cabin fuse 6, also 5 Amp, both are supplies to the databus diagnostic interface.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I have checked the continuity for both and both are functioning.

Checked the voltages for the 2 fuses the engine bay fuse indicates battery voltage whereas the cabin fuse shows no voltage.  Any ideas? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Try with ignition switched on, I think the cabin one is switched, engine bay one permanent 12V.

No voltage indicated with the key 'on' or start position.

See if fuses 1-5 also have no 12V with ignition on.

Could you bung your VIN in a PM so I can find exact car build date, and so the most appropriate wiring data, please?

Hi Pete,

Sent you Vin in a PM - No power with key on to fuses 1-5

Well took a fly lead from a 12v supply in the fuse box to the fuses 1-5 input and the dash light up and was able to start the car. There were 2 warning lights that remained on the dash - ESP/Traction control & Electromechanical steering. Unfortunately this method seems to render the diagnostic port inoperable (showed connection light without 12v  fly lead  but no connection) - Feeling a bit better the car actually starts now just need to track down why there is a lack of power to the fuses.

There's a 'terminal 15 relay' in some versions of the circuits that could well be involved. With VIN supplied I should be able to work out next steps to investigate.

Bit late for me to be thinking/looking at circuits today, should find time in the morning.
