What is this for and should there be something inside it? Never noticed it before. Just unsure. 

It’s the air intake from outside the car. Air goes from there via the air box to the engine.

Same as my car mate, collects air prior to going to the filter!

You should have a cover clipped on top. Are you saying you don’t ?

No, I have the cover. just wasnt sure if something should be under it

There should be a cover but nothing inside...    Its just an empty chamber that helps airflow.

Earlier this week a Mk2 Octavia.

It diverts the air and rattles. very hard to get it to stop. cause of a rumble inside the car.
