Water in boot

Featured Replies

I checked my spare today and found an inch or so of water in the wheel well. No obvious sign of entry. Anyone else had this issue?

When I bought my new Kamiq 2.5 years back I asked the selling dealer to fit an OE reversing camera. After a few weeks when I had occasion to look in the footwell, I found half an inch of water sloshing about. It seems that their regular fitter had omitted a grommet in the boot lid. Fixed under warranty, slightly rusting spare replaced, I’ve had no further problems.

Could be something else of course.

Hi Tom. Yes I saw your original post re your problem, but in my case the boot floor is completely dry. I don’t use a pressure washer to wash the car but I did try playing the garden hose inside the wheel arches and under the rear of the car to see if that would show up the leak, but nothing. I keep an eye out to see if it recurs when I wash the car again or when we eventually get some rain.

Some possible thoughts from experience...

Rear wash wipe pipe

Rearlight seald

Rear wiper grommet

In my case on our kodiaq it was the wiper grommet that water was getting past.  That took a while to find.

Cheers for your input. Not sure if those  possibilities would result in water ingress which didn’t get the boot carpet wet but I’ll certainly investigate.

Rear tail light seal leaks do not get the carpet wet but gets water into spare tyre wells. As does the flaps behind or actually in front of the rear bumper if there are those on the Kamiq which I suspect there are.

Thanks toot. I’ll certainly have a look at those areas.

Doesn't it come up through the thread where the wheel securing bolt goes, if the bolts not there?

Good idea but I think not. The spare wheel securing bolt is plastic and secured to a flange which is welded to the floor. No holes that I can see.

Yep, I had this issue in April last year when I had the car 3 weeks.  Car went into dealer and after 3, yes 3 months they diagnosed that there was a pin head sized hole in the welding on top of the tailgate.  After many furious emails to Skoda it was eventually fixed and I was compensated.

Be prepared to have very invasive work done though, it involves headlining off and panoramic roof off to repair it.

Hopefully your leak isn’t the same as mine.

Thanks for that carefree. I never considered that it could find its way in from such a high point in the car but I will certainly investigate that possibility. You’re right, the work to rectify it is a bit off putting, but I guess worth it if you get a resolution .

Honestly mate it was beyond frustrating.  I’d only had the car for 2-3 weeks, then it went into the dealership for the next 3 months.  I posted about it at the time.

Ask your dealer to check the weld points, it might save a lot of time with them ruling out other possibilities.

That'll be the special anti-gravity water unless they were stupid enough to put the thread in a raised boss.

Update - torrential rain today, so checked the boot when it finally stopped to find an inch of water in the wheel well. The front of the boot floor, behind the seats, was also wet, something I hadn’t noticed before. Going into to back seat area I then saw that the central part of the rear seat was also wet. So it’s definitely getting in from the top of the car somewhere. Tomorrow I’ll try and take out carpets and possibly the seat, also try and look behind the headlining.

Update - took some photos last night. Seat cushion:

The passenger side boot liner (LH side of photo) is wet along its bottom edge but doesn’t seem to be wet higher up. The driver’s side is completely dry. So it looks like the leak is definitely on the passenger side. Next step is to play the hose over the top of the car, particularly on the tailgate, and see if any water comes in. If not, I’ll hose the wheel arch to see if the issue is there. Given previous comments re the invasive nature of any investigations carried out by a Skoda workshop, I’m aiming to at least identify the problem before contacting the dealer.

Update - so I’ve blasted the hose on the tailgate, shark fin, light cluster, wheel arch, and even got under the car and blasted the front of the spare wheel well. Nothing showing in the boot, the seat cushion or the boot side panels. I’m completely stumped. I don’t want to be without the car for 3 months with some basic courtesy car while the dealer tries to find it, so I’ll just keep monitoring it for the time being. I saw on another forum a trick of scattering talc on a surface which makes it easier to see water trails, so I’ve tried that.

Unless anyone else has any other ideas.

@marineboy I realise this was a while ago now. Did you ever find the root cause of your leak?
I've just picked up a 72 plate Kamiq and there was a centimetre of water sloshing about in the tyre well :-(

I did. I traced the source of the water to the plastic shroud next to the light - water was running down the scuttle and underneath the shroud. Strangely enough the other side was fine. As a temporary measure I just put duct tape over it, meaning to point it out at the next service and get it fixed under warranty, but I didn’t really want the car in the garage for a day while they pulled it apart so I just left it and it’s fine.

I coated mine the area with Waxoyl stopped all water entering
