I have a Furby VRS which I love, but its time to get a bigger car - so I will get a new Octavia. The question is - do I get a 2.0 TDI now (probably Sport) or wait for the VRS?

I can get a brand new Sport with all the extras I want for abour

I have the 2.0TDi estate and my wife the Fabia vrs.

As a rough comparison these are figures for our run-in cars. When it says 50 this would be a reading of 53 on the speedo to allow for over-reading i.e. 50 to 70 on clock would be read as 53 to 73 mph

FAB (50 - 70 3rd gear) = 4.3s

OCT (ditto) = 4.6s

FAB (50 - 70 5th gear) = 6.0s

OCT = 6.6s

FAB (30 - 50 3rd) = 3.5s

OCT = 3.8s

Interestingly 40 to 60 in 3rd was faster in the OCT.

OK, I had hoped that despite the Octavia being heavier, the newer more powerful engine would have made it quicker. Hmm, OK... guess I need to wait for the VRS Diesel.

How about (I know it's not a Skoda) a Seat Leon TDI 170 FR, Drive the Deal have them up at £15500 at the moment, which is in my opinion a great price, for what will be a Q car.

My local dealer has told me - although he said Skoda UK were not the best at letting dealers know what was going on - that the latest is that dealer demo models will be available in Sept / Oct so customers can order from that date and he expects the first retail cars to be delivered Jan 07. Also said he expects sales of the petrol vRS to stall once people see what the diesel is capable of.

The Seat Leon is a good idea though... I think they look great - though I am kinda wedded to Skodas.

Ill see if I can get a test drive on the Seat I think - at the very least I will get to try the engine out.

Why not test drive a 2.0TDI sport now and see if it meets up with your expectations. That you can definately rule it out or not.

I have just been looking at the 2.0 sport today. After having a test drive in it, I can say its definitely worth having a look at. Its not got the initial acceleration of the 1.8 vrs turbo that i currently have but mid range power is very good, not to mention the amount of cash you will be saving on fuel. Saying all that I decided to plump for a new silver Octavia VRS

2.0 TDI Sport, with a remap Same (if not better) performance than a potential standard 2.0 TDI (180 bhp) VRS plus a few grand better off

Ross, BPM's dealer is in the Republic of Ireland. Us UK residents as usual have to wait longer and lose half the toys too. Typical eh.

Have you driven the 2.0 TDI 140 Yet btw? IMO the 0-60 on paper is way off the mark. You should judge for yourself but I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

I know a guy who test drove a BMW 120d (163bhp) and a A3 2.0 TDI 140 on the same day. They had both cars for an hour or so and reckons that although the BM is smoother, the A3 midrange abilities were much better with the BM running out of breath before the Audi. Also the Audi lost very little to the BM from 0-60. There was nothing like nearly 3 seconds of a difference as implied on paper.

My local dealer (Derby) tells me the vRS Diesel will be hitting the UK in September but hasn't confirmed delivery date or price - Skoda haven't told them.

I'm sure we'd all be keen to hear from anyone who's already driven this car, especially if they can compare it with a standard 140bhp 2.0 litre or a chipped model.

I have the Fabia VRS and have driven both the Audi 140TDI and the 120d... I have to say I was unimpressed with the Audi, it didn't seem to have any extra performance over the Fabia but it was a little more refined, the BMW also didn't seem any faster in a straight line but was a much nicer drive than the other two. Smoother, quieter, more confident around the corners...
