Space saver size

Looking to put in a space saver what size would I need if wheels are 19's?

All Superb MK3 cars can use 16" wheels, except the 272HP/280HP 4x4 models which need 17" wheels to clear the front brake calipers on the 340x30mm front brakes discs.

So if you don't need 17" wheels, you can use a 215/60R16 tyre fitted to a 6Jx16 ET43 rim (from the Karoq). This will fit flush in the spare wheel well. Surprisingly, a  215/60R16 tyre fitted to a 6.5Jx16 ET41 rim (from the Superb MK3) won't fit flush in the spare wheel well. Hence, the benefit of using a narrower 6J rim from the Karoq.

As you can see in the chart below, 215/60R16 fitted to a 6J rim has an actual inflated width of 215mm. On the Superb MK3, that's the limit for the spare wheel fitting flush in the spare wheel well.

Actual width of inflated tyres

215/60R16 fitted to 6J rim = 215mm

215/60R16 fitted to 6.5J rim = 221mm

The 16" spare wheel would also work on the Superb MK3 272HP/280HP 4x4 models, but you could only use it as a rear wheel. However, many people who use a space saver prefer to use it only on the rear.

The MK3 Octavia VRS won't accept a 17" due to the size of the brake caliper.

The Octavia MK3 VRS uses either 312x25mm or 340x30mm front brake discs.

15" rims will clear the front brake calipers on cars fitted with 288x25mm front brake discs.

16" rims will clear the front brake calipers on cars fitted with 312x25mm front brake discs.

17" rims will clear the front brake calipers on cars fitted with 340x30mm front brake discs.

Interesting, I always thought that 18's were needed for VRS' but happy to learn otherwise.

Any idea what size the 17" and 18" space saver tyres are? I'm trying to work out diameters they are in comparison to current 19"s, ideally to find similar if possible.

On the Octavia MK3, a 205/55R16 fitted to a 6.5Jx16 ET46 5/112 57.1 steel rim could be used as a spare. If it's a VRS with 340x30mm front brake discs, the 16" spare wheel could only be fitted to the rear.

Another option is 125/70R18 fitted to a 3.5Jx18 ET25.5 5/112 57.1 steel space saver rim. However, as there is enough room in the space wheel well for at least a fully inflated 205/55R16 it seems a bit pointless using a 125/70R18 space saver. The space saver may be thin, but it's very heavy. Being able to inflate the space saver up to 4.2 Bar (60psi) requires a heavy duty construction of the tyre and rim...hence you are unlikely to save much weight by going down the space saver route.

As you can see in the chart below, the outside diameter of all these tyre sizes are very close. There's less than 1.3% difference between any of them.

Outside diameter of tyres

125/70R18 632.2mm

195/65R15 634.5mm

205/55R16 631.9mm

205/50R17 636.8mm

225/45R17 634.3mm

225/40R18 637.2mm

225/35R19 640.1mm

If you want a cheap 17" steel rim to use as a spare, you could use a 6.5Jx17 ET38 5/112 57.1 steel rim (from Kodiaq) fitted with a 205/50R17 tyre.

Sounds like a sensible solution. I suspected all of them would be similar size wise so Speedo readings and vehicle heights arnt modified too much. I was hoping to pick up a second hand 17" or 18" space saver as a spare but may price up a cheap steel replacement. As the wife uses the car I don't want to get a 16" if it only goes on the back, I don't trust the scissor jack to try swapping 2 wheels if the front blows.

There is an 18" space saver rim listed in the Skoda parts catalogue for the Octavia MK3. There's usually a large number being sold on ebay with this OEM part number, ie. 1K0601027AP, usually with a 125/70R18 space saver tyre. Always check the tyre size with any seller, because there's other 18" space saver tyres such as 125/60R18 and 135/80R18 that won't be correct for the Octavia MK3.
