Leak from crank case ventilation

Featured Replies

I have an oil on the back of a BXW engine. It looks like a small leak from the upper corrugated hose connection into the crank case breather unit.

I removed the hose and tried to clean it as a fix. The unit is a little tricky to get to, but when the airfilter box is off you can get to it easier from above. There is an o-ring which looks o.k. but I am not sure what else should leak up there

The stupid thing is that I replaced the crank case breather 2.5 years ago. Did I get a bad unit?

Do I have to replace it again?

Has anyone simply changed the o-ring with success?

I guess the original o-ring may have lost it's springiness, and failed to seal well onto the new breather module.

Do you want/need/have the part number of the hose? I would imagine a fresh o-ring of appropriate size will do the trick though?

I have not thought of changing the hose as a whole... but that might be another option.

What year is the car?

Hi,

It is a 2009 model.

I thought so, the whole hose is £23.42 + VAT from a dealership; current part number 036 103 493 EC

Pricey for what it is, certainly when compared to the price of an o-ring.

Thanks,

I have just ordered from Skoda.

My daughter's previous car, a November 2009 built and reg'd SEAT Ibiza 1.4 with that engine, ended up with an annoying leak at the rear of the engine which meant that the inlet manifold rear/bottom got "wetted" with engine oil, I cleaned that up and bought in a pair of new O-rings as "the word was" that there was a material problem on one of these O-rings on the oil seperater and they caused many leaks under warranty so needed replacing.

I'm slightly ashamed to say that the new O-rings "lived" in the glovebox of that car as I just didn't quite feel the need to mess around behind the engine!  In reality, I was looking after that car while she worked abroad and just ran out of time to sort that out before she came back to UK permanently  - then she sold it.
