Error: adblue (DEF) - no engine start in 1000 km

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I would like to share my unfortunate experience in regards to some adblue subsystem acting up.

Story/sequence of events.

- added some 3.5 lt of adblue to the tank, in preparation for a longer trip.

(Min qty as shown on the dash was 2.75, max 8 lt)

- waited 30' with the ignition on, engine off, for the adblue range to update, which it did, to 9000 km

- didn't give it a second thought and drove the car the next week for some 1200 km

- then, one day suddenly, the engine yellow light turned on in the dash + I got an error visible in the infotainment (car/vehicle section) saying - in white lettering, Error adblue (DEF) - the adblue logo had a spnner depocted under it.

- i checked the user manual - everything pointed to my having to to visit  a service and have the error checked. Mind you, I was vacationing away from.home, in Greece. Restaring the engine after an hour or driving around didn't clear the fault.

- OK, so yesterday i started my journey back home - range on the adblue was 8000 km, when suddenly I get the warning - no start in 1000 km- with the update of the range to... 1000, of course.

So I tried to see if maybe I can trick the tank sensor by topping up some more adblue. It said I could add some 6.5 lt so I put in 5 lt

Engine of, ignition on for 5 painfull minutes. The error did not disappear, the range did not update (by now I was down to 950 km) but the refill qty indicator vanished *see first picture attached.

- used my ODB11 to identify the fault, it was/is  P2BAF00; could not clear the fault - it supposedly is a hardware issue, the adblue pump or injector

- during the next day and a half, I drove back towards home, managed to cross the border with some 40 km range left.

- didabled start/stop so that it doesn't "crash" at a stoplight and leave me powerless in the middle.of traffic.

Now this might be important for those that encounter a similar problem and have a range issue.

the engine doesn't cut out when the range reaches 0

The notification light turns red and stating the engine is disabled, but only if you first stop it  * see  second picture attached

I managed to bring it closer to the desired service center, 20 km after the red ligjt turned on.

Called Skoda while still on the road - they advised me to call back when the car is imobilized so that they can send a tow-truck, which they did.

Now I waiting that tmrw the servcie will run a diagnostic and confirm that it is a defect covered by the warranty.

Good luck to other owners out there, hope such an event doesn't spoil you vacation as it did mine.

Later edit

Today I found out that the adblue injector cable had been attacked by rodents (in Greece) - hence the problem described above.

As the cable seems to be attached to the injector, the whole assembly must be replaced, some 300 Euro, not counting the workmanship.

And rodent attacks are not covered by warranty 😞

Typical procedure These days: Swap the entire assy instead of fixing the harness (in case it's not a big bunch of single wires).
