Driving a DSG Auto

Featured Replies

Hi all, new to this forum. Have treated myself to a new  Fabia SE Comfort 1.0TSI 110PS DSG.  2023

Love the motor and driving with the DSG is a delight, however have owned several previous Skodas all manual so I’m getting used the the DSG way of driving.

Only had the car for 2 weeks and have a couple of questions regarding the use of the DSG box as there appears to be be differing views on line.

1) when stationary at lights etc for a minute or two leave in D hold on the foot break - got that, but if there for a lengthy time put into N or P apply the handbrake ?

2) In slow moving traffic, hold ups, etc leave in D and creep forward using foot brake to control movement or select manual and shift gears yourself ?
The dealer said leave it in D and let it do it’s thing,

I should probably just use my instincts and enjoy the car, but thanks anyway, any useful tips from current DSG owners would be handy.

Cant think of any tips to give you as i just stick mine in D and that,s it

Leave it in D unless you know it's going to be a while (multi-way traffic lights, railway level crossings etc).  For longer stops slip it into N (and if on a hill put handbrake on, as can then rest foot from brake)

There are 2 stages when waiting, if foot is hard on brake will not try and pull, if ease brake a bit it expects you to start (and if you have start-stop on the easing will start engine, as will wobbling steering wheel)

Pretty much the same as above.

If I know I'll only be waiting a short while, I'll stay in Drive. If I've just come to a stop on a multi light junction, I'll whack in Neutral and pull the handbrake.

I try not to creep when in slow moving traffic, I don't know what wear that might have on the DSG box, so I avoid it where I can

Don't think there is any right or wrong way to do things, I'm only 1 year into driving a DSG myself.

I was told D and hold on the footbrake, for longer stops Handbrake and P .

Neutral is for towing or some such function.

I would love to know the official explanation

@gumdrop  Well that is total guff re the towing or some such function.

With a Manual hand / Parking brake if you want to go to N when stopped for prolonged times and not have the brake lights on you can do.

You can have Stop / Start operate.

No need to go through Neutral & Reverse twice to get in and out of Park.

Cars with an E-brake is a slightly different story, and also Autohold will have the brake lights on.

Read the owners manual for the particular model. engine and DSG is just 'Simply Clever'.

Thank you, I find the manual confusing as every version is included so I tend to rely on Briskoda. 😉

I have auto hold, stop start and all that. Stick it in D and let it do what it wants, apart from when towing when I put it in manual and use the paddle shift when cruising, and D in the towns.
