Cambelt Replacement

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I rang Marshall Skoda in Leicester today to ask about a replacement water pump (that's another story) and they told me that i didn't necessarily need to change the cambelt at the same time (I'm 80k and 7 years) as they have now officially decided to move away from the "5 years or 100k miles" after recent testing now gives them the confidence to advise "140k - 180k miles" with no age consideration any longer.

Worth sharing I thought as there seems to be good debate on here as to why UK guidance is different to continent.

Cheers.

You will find about half a dozen threads since the change was made in July in the UK.

There is not much to debate, VW Group , VW, Skoda, SEAT & Audi have been taking the pith for a decade with UK owners / customers.

As you need to remove the belt anyway to replace the water pump, it should only be the price of the part extra?

Probably worth getting it done now rather than an expensive belt change later?

I reckon you're right @Gabbo, I'm going to get it done with the water pump. 👍 It was strange to me the lady at Skoda was trying to tell me I didn't need to.

I had the waterpump changed by Skoda because of the known component problem & asked for the belt at the same time.

At the time they told me it was done but now 120k km later they are telling me there is no record of the belt change in the "online records".

I'm a bit peevd at beeing asked to pay 500€ to change the belt now & will probably change the water pump again for the same reason.

IMHO trying to save the price of the water pump is somehow gambling.

I also faced the water pump issue (stuck at 62000km) and decided to replace the cambelt at the same time instead of the 210000 km recommendation.

Definitely @Bap33, I'm going to get the water pump and cambelt done, price to do them separately at different times is crazy.

Is there anything available online about the change in cambelt interval changes - particularly if it only applies to certain models/engines? My Superb shouldn't need this for quite a while as its only a year old but my wife has a 2019 Polo GTI which will be 5 years old next spring so would in theory be due under the old recommendation but will be quite happy if its not needed - particularly as its very low mileage.

I haven't looked tbh @Dieselgate, I'd drop the Service Centre at your local dealership a call. They definitely gave me the impression it was VAG wide but worth a check. Cheers.

Been trying to dig about for this info. Local dealer not helpful. Trying to find out if this applies to the hybrid drivetrain (modified 1.4tsi). Mine is 5 years old pretty much now.

I had conflicting information about cambelt interval changes so contacted Skoda UK by email (the reply is evidence should it turn out that I was given 'duff' information).

The reply states "my vehicle was fitted with a lifetime cambelt and can be considered as 15 years or 180,000 miles." I had provided them with my car registration number so it's possible other Skoda vehicles (and other VAG cars) will have different cambelt change intervals, and perhaps worth checking out?
