I have a Octavia VRS Mk4, how can I check if the software updates are current and up to date? 

It's in the system settings menu where you change units etc.

 

It'll update itself when necessary and if you have the restarting infotainment system problem and the car is in warranty get a dealer to do it for free.

That's true of the software version of the infotainment system, but to see the software version of the other electronic modules in the car (of which there are many, sometimes 30+) you need to use a diagnostic scan tool such as VCDS or OBD11.
