Issue with new tyres

Recommended Posts

I have just had the original Bridgestone tyres replaced with Continental eco contact and it looks like the tyres don’t fit the wheels properly as the rim is showing. It was not like this with the Bridgestone. Any thoughts as it looks strange and there isn’t any protection for the rim from the tyre now. The first picture are the originals and the second the new tyres with rim showing.

Assuming they are the same sized tyre the answer is simple. The Bridgestone tyres had rim protection, the Continental's don't.

Okay they are the same size I’m a bit annoyed the fitters didn’t advise that these tyres do not have a rim protector . It just looks like the tyres don’t fit the wheels properly.

195/50R16 or 195/55R16 would protect its 6J rim a lot better than 215/40R17 protects its 7J rim.

In some countries with poor roads, 195/55R16 is a standard tyre size on the Rapid. 215/40R17 isn't offered at all because the roads would simply destroy the wheel.

215/40R17 on a 7J rim really is quite vulnerable to kerbing damage because the sidewalls don't bulge out much.

Actual inflated width of tyres

215/40R17 fitted to a 7J rim is 212mm

195/50R16 fitted to a 6J rim is 201mm

195/55R16 fitted to a 6J rim is 201mm

So although the 215/40R17 tyre fitted to a 7J rim is 11mm wider than either a 195/50R16 or 195/55R16 fitted to a 6J rim, the 7J rim is 1" (25.4mm) wider than the 6J rim. The result is that these 16" tyre sizes are 14.4mm wider relative to the width of the rim. That's the difference between badly scraping the rim on the kerb and not scraping the rim at all.

If the tyre fitters recommended the tyres as a replacement for the Bridgestone's, then it would have been helpful if they'd let you know about the lack of rim protection.

But if you just rocked up to a tyre fitting place and asked for a set of Continental Eco Contacts, you got what you asked for, and it would be a bit unfair to expect the tyre fitter to second-guess your choice.

Too late, but it's your responsibility to order what you wanted.
