Škoda Felicia KR(1.8 16V) Swap Advice needed!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys! I am experiencing car trouble with my 1.3 MPi Felicia engine. I am looking for possible swaps as it would cost me quite some money to fix the stock motor. Has anyone swapped in the KR 1.8 16V motor from the Golf GTi MK2? Is it easy to fit? What kind of modifications does it require? Any help is appreciated, I am kinda cornered here as budget is low but the deal for the motor is good. Thanks in advanced

Geia sou Patrida !

May i ask what's going to happen in the next MOT (Kteo is in GR) with that motor? Nizamis in Greece as made a Felicia with Leon 1.6 motor.

Γειά σου και σε εσένα Φυλακτέ ! I was thinking of going the illegal way with this, try to get someone to pass it through inspection or changing the motor every two years 🤣. Thank you for reminding me of Nizamis, I'll have to search it up a little bit and see if I can make something like this happen for cheap. After all the KR motor was a cheap deal, want to keep it budget friendly

KR would be probably similar to 2.0 from Fabia. The biggest problem is intake, as engines in Felicia are mounted angled forward, while large VW engines are slanted backwards.

Exactly our thinking. We were concerned with it and will have to try something out. If it doesn't fit maybe a different intake manifold would do the job?

Now I remembered, I've seen a 1.8 16V Felicia photos, so I googled a bit and Heureka!

The description says that the intake is from ABF engine, but it apparently has welded plenum chamber to fit under the bonnet.

I guess they used bits from the 1.9D engine - gearbox adaptor plate and the engine mount - to fit it in the Felicia. Not sure about oil sump.

I also found this video, where they use bike carbs

What's your opinion on a swap like this?

What would be effects of a heavier engine (also slanted forwards) to the handling characteristics? Long term effects on chassis?

Are these projects made for limited use, like race circuit use for weekends, or suitable for daily use?

That's actually a really good question. Well, I think the chassis can handle it. It is not that much heavier from a diesel engine (which is the heaviest factory option). The forward slanting would have a negative effect on the handling but I suppose that won't be such an issue since it won't sit that far in front. Definitely more "understeery" than what it is now but I have no plans of pushing the car to it's limit (not again at least 💀). All in all I am hoping for a more powerful car and later I will be focusing on the handling. I have plans to make it a track car towards the end of it's life but for now just a daily driver (and a little bit of a sleeper 😁). Thank you for the question, it helped me put my plans in order and rethink the whole situation.

In Greece, for such conversions, we say "you get married with it". Which means that if there is a problem, you will have to solve it yourself since the other technicians do not know exactly what you have done, if you have a technician you depend on him for a lifetime and you will pay what he asks you every time, there is no guarantee for reliability, very difficult to impossible to resell it.
On the other hand: IF you know what you're doing then the car transforms and if you don't exaggerate the horsepower then every time you drive it you have a permanent smile on your face.

I am aware of the saying and exactly what you state. I am an amateur technician myself, my best friend is also one and I have a very dependable mechanic friend whom I have discussed with regarding the swap (KR Golf 2 owner), as well as some other mechanics I know well. I have no plans of selling the car as it is worth next to nothing, I bought it for 500€ after all and I am fixing it up. Trust me when I say I am already married with this car, I love it to death. The problem I am facing is mainly the lack of power and sometimes the delivery of it. It often cuts of the power and resumes right after but a split second is enough for me to get scared during an overtake.

You are my Man !

Have you ever thought to change cylinders-pistons with aftermarket and make it light-turbo?

I don't mean 1.8 20V, just the 1.3 engine.

I thought about turboing the 1.3 but that needs a lot of work and quite some money for a maximum of 30hp. Not my goal to make the car unreliable and possibly a time bomb. The 1.3 can be tuned only that much while being safe.

@D.FYLAKTOS thanks, do you have some more information about how they fitted the engine? Did they use a Felicia gearbox with an adaptor plate (does the Felicia 1.6 work?) or did they use whole unit from Leon?

I think that'd be valuable information for @ivcars003, even though the BCB is different from the KR.

Unfortunatelly the topic for that Felicia is from 2010 and the member Nizamis no longer posts there.

Even if me make a quote there, he wont answer because will get no notification.

I can search for his telephone-email etc.
