Guidance on changing rear brake pads needed?

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Does anyone have any step by step guidance on changing the brake pads on the rear calipers?

This may sound stupid, but I'm used to servicing my car myself and done plenty to it in the past; top mount struts, wishbones, front discs, etc.., without any support from others.

This said, I've never changed pads on a rear caliper before as all my previous cars had drums. Is it straightforward to change them? As I'm getting confused with the fact it connects to the e-brake and the fact you need a winding tool.

I don't want to be messing anything up - I don't want to risk trial and error.

Any step by step guidance or general help is very much appreciated, thanks.

Just use a suitable rewind tool, to fully retract the pistons in a clockwise direction, obviously clean everything up using a small stiff brush and plenty brake cleaner, apply ceramic brake grease to the contact points only, make sure that the guide pins are still free to move in and out, if necessary clean them up and apply a stop of silicon grease to them. Either replace the bolts on the guide pins or scrub them clean and apply some blue Loctite to the last few threads.

After putting everything back together, pump the pads out using the brake pedal then operate the handbrake firmly a few times to get the handbrake mechanism to its new correct starting point.

As you have already worked on front discs brakes, I'll not insult you by giving you any advice on how to move the pads back initially so that you can get things apart.

Edit:- I've not had a reason to need to replace the pads on my wife's 2015 VW Polo 1.2TSI yet, I just "service" all the brakes every other year and at 46,ooomiles, there is still plenty meat left on the pads - it will be when the discs need changing that I'll have to replace the pads as the rear discs in these cars have a hard life through lack of real braking work.

Here you'll find the workshop manual for everything to do with the brake system on the Mk3.

I used it to replace all my pads about a month ago, quite handy. Shows the torques you need, too.

@CReese123- if it's not too late, or you've not already seen the post, I put the following post with notes and tips about rear changing discs and pads including a link to an early post about changing front pads and discs.  I've not changed that many sets of brake discs, pads (and shoes and drums) but the rear for the 2015 Fabia were the easiest I've ever done and front pads and discs second easiest, though its still a messy job yet with cleanliness required and like all jobs on cars can involve a bit of awkwardness and Sod's Law will ususally apply, well it does for me.

The post (and post within post) -
