spare wheel size

Featured Replies

Hi clever people . I'm looking to get a full sized spare wheel for my sportline wagon. I'm currently running the stock Vega rims,  19inch, 8J, 5 spoke.  Is there any problems with using a 19 inch 7J width Rim from a Kodiaq?

Thanks.

I mean, it wouldn’t match to start with.

But it would need to have a tyre on it that is the same rolling radius as your current tyres.

and also that wouldn’t make it a full size spare as it would be a thinner tyre.

Thanks.  I don't care if it doesn't match, it's just to be used as a spare wheel. I'm trying to work out what tyre I could put  on to keep the same rolling radius, if it can be done ....

What size are the present tyres on the car?

They may also fit a 7J rim acceptably.

@Carlston is the man.

Thanks Pete. Currently have 235/40/r19 tyres . I've been  reading lots online trying to figure it all out. Found some online calculators too but still can't t seem to get a consistent result .

It is not recommended to put a 235 wide tyre on a 7" wide rim.

In addition, u'll end up with different rolling diameter.

A few of us have put a full size tyre in the Superb.

Thanks JR. I understand I shouldn't use a 235 tyre on a 7" wheel.   Im trying to find out if I can use a 19" 7J ET 43 Rim from a Kodiaq as a spare IF I can figure out what tyre to put in it. Finding an exact matching 19" 8J 44et Vega Rim has been difficult.

Here are 2 links that hopefully will answer all your questions.....

235/50 R19 is an approved tyre size on a 7J ET43 rim

To check off set and rolling diameter, use www.willtheyfit.com

On the Superb MK3, if you want the carpet to be flush with the spare wheel in the boot, the spare tyre can't have an actual inflated width of more than 215mm.

The tyre width that is moulded into the tyre's sidewall, such as 215, is just the "nominal" width. The actual inflated tyre width always depends on the rim width to which the tyre is fitted.

Thanks for such a detailed reply @Carlston . unfortunately your links don't seem to work for me . I don't mind if the spare sits a bit higher up in the boot well , I can easily sort that out .

I think maybe people are missing my point or I've not been clear enough in my initial post....I've got an opportunity to buy a cheap ex kodiaq ,19" 7J 43et Rim to use as a spare . I'm currently running stock Vega wheels that are 19"8J 44et with tyres of 235/40/r19 and a space saver spare, limited to 80km/hr when in use. I'm trying to work out what tyre, if any I can put on the kodiaq Rim which would then still be compatible with my other 3 Vegas when in use... ie not be speed limited, have the same rolling radius/ride height etc... to be safe and not potentially damage the car.

Thanks.

If a 215/45R19 tyre size was available then you could have fitted that to the 7Jx19 ET43 rim. However, no one makes a 215/45R19 tyre size.

You could fit a 225/45R19 to the 7Jx19 ET43 rim, however the outside diameter of this tyre size is 2.2% bigger than 235/40R19 as shown in the chart below.

225/45R19 is still a different tyre size to 235/40R19, so the 80km/h (50mph) limit would still apply.

Outside diameter of tyre

235/40R19 670.6mm

225/45R19 685.1mm (+2.2% bigger outside diameter than 235/40R19)

Perhaps consider a cheap 8Jx19 ET45 5/112 57.1 steel rim from the Skoda Enyaq (also fitted to VW iD.4, VW iD.5, and Audi Q4). This specification is almost identical to the 8Jx19 ET44 5/112 57.1 from the Superb MK3, ie. just a 1mm difference in offset. With this rim the same 235/40R19 tyre size could be used as a spare.

A 235/40R19 fitted to an 8J rim has an actual inflated width of 235mm, ie. the same as the "nominal" width. This means that when the spare wheel is fitted into the spare wheel well the carpet will be raised by 20mm.

Brilliant mate, that's exactly what I was after. Thanks for your time and detail. 👊 🍻 . Looks like I'll keep looking for a propper sized matched Rim.

how important is the offset when running on a spare? any issues with say a 8J et49 rim on the spare, ie 5mm different compared to the other 3 et44?

IMHO, it’s a spare, you aren’t going to be running for 100’s miles on it.  Just look at the ‘official’ spare that is supplied for 19 inch wheels, tyre width and offset massively different to the alloys. OK max 50 mph but its for temporary use.

As and aside, piece of closed cell foam cut to the shape of the boot floor with the ‘extra’ width of the new tyre/wheel combination cut out as well will allow your carpet to fit perfectly on top.

Yeah, I figure 5mm different should be fine for a spare , but I don't know what I don't know .... got some foam coming already. 🍻
