Indicators stuck on

Featured Replies

Hi, daughter just contacted me. Driving home, when she indicates left the indicator on the dash and outside the car do not turn off when the stalk returns to the middle position. When she presses the hazard warning light while the indicators are flashing left, the hazard lights seem to be overridden by the left indicator. Anyone had a similar issue? Was thinking maybe a stalk problem or indicator relay unless these are replaced nowadays by BCM module or similar?

Car is 2018 Fabia Redline.

Indicators have been done by integrated circuits within BCM-type units, instead of relays, since Mk1 Fabia.

If you have a multimeter and an inclination to use it, you might be able to probe the relevant input pins at the BCM connector to see what it is being commanded to do.

Does the car have adaptive cruise control? If so there's another module involved too, and possibly a clockspring.

Hi Breezy_Pete, thanks for the reply. Firstly where is the BCM located? And no the car doesn't have cruise control, only speed limiter.

BCM is above accelerator pedal in RHD mk1 and mk2, assume it's similar on mk3, can give you pin numbers for indicator inputs tomorrow if useful.

Would appreciate that thanks. Do you think it could be a possible stalk issue rather than BCM? Was wondering if contacts possibly faulty in the stalk itself. I guess with stalk in middle position an input would still be present at the BCM resulting in indicators remaining on?

Yes, I think it is likely to be a stalk fault. Moving parts.

It would be nice to prove it before spending any money though.

Thanks again for the advice

It does appear to be the stalk. When the left indicator stays on, if you are 'forceful' switching between left and right indication it eventually cancels.

The car has the combined indicator/wiper assembly. Is this easy to change or a dealer/mechanic job?

Don't know, sorry.

Tried electrical cleaner on the indicator assembly and it seems to work again (for now)

I don't know how alike or unalike the VW stalks are to each other but the other thread attached might, or might not, give you a related/unrelated idea.

Servisol Super 10 Switch Cleaning Lubricant might, or may not, help more than switch cleaner alone.

Its easy to change should you know how to not make an airbag explode. I did this myself when I retrofit cruise control myself.

I still have my old indicator stalk should you need one - Its a non-cruise control stalk though so if your vehicle has that mine wouldnt do.

To replace, remove airbag, take wheel off, remove clockspring, unscrew the stalk and pull it off.

There are two tiny screws holding the stalk itself together. I made the error of thinking these held it in place, unscrewed them and almost made my stalk 100 different pieces.
