Superb iv electric range.

Hi guys,

I picked up a 2021 iv superb, great car and really enjoying it, but I have just charged it to 100% and it tells me it has 31km cruising range, checked on ŠKODA connect app. Should I be getting approx 40km - 50km. Do I need to bring it to ŠKODA for them to check the battery.

yes you should be getting 40-50kms out of it.

I take it that this is a used car, if so then it could be based on historic driving of the previous owner or it could be the current cold spell killing the battery.

Give it a few charges and see how you get on.

Hi thanks for coming back,

yes I was thinking the cold weather could be causing issues with the battery, bought it used and comes with ŠKODA full warranty. I used most of the battery before midnight and charged it overnight, see attached 26km 100% charged, that’s less again 31km v 26. Will keep an eye, but as you mentioned I would expect to get 40-50, I wonder are any iv users experiencing the same issue as it could be weather related, currently charging on a granny lead, waiting to get wallplug installed next week.

Yes, apparently ŠKODA warranty the battery for 8years. I reckon it’s weather related, I will drive in hybrid mode until the temperature pick up, will re test again.

…. as long as the owner has always worn green socks and sprinkles 00’s and 000’s on their bacon sarnies every other time they eat one and that must be before 05.00 on the third Wednesday of the month preceding Lent.

The cold greatly affects the battery. My GTE shows 23 miles this time of year with the heating/AC on. In the summer that is closer to 28. But I actually only get about 15 miles real use in the cold. It gets me to work and then I use dinosaurs to get me home. In the summer hols with no school run I can get to work and back.

 

To summarise: it's the cold. Try turning off AC, heating and all other stuff and you'll get an idea of the real health of the battery.

Ok, I turned off ac/heat and the range went to 36km, I’ll just have to wrap up lol. But yes as you mention the cold affects the battery. Will continue to keep an eye. Enjoying the drive so far so good. 33cent per kw is a bit expensive so have to look at smart rates

But at 3miles/kw that's 11cent per mile. Probably half the price of petrol. Then you have the fact it will probably do 100k miles before needing brakes. It's a fairly frugal platform to own.

 

Just checking that you are looking at km and not miles? 36 sounds suspiciously like the total range for miles.

Yes it’s KM, good to know re price so will be cheap to run. I think the Škoda connect looks at your previous drive and works out the next drive based on previous driving habits, did not use heating this morning and the data has changed to 36km. 
is there an option to source the heat/ac from petrol instead of using the battery?

There's no way to tell it where to get the heat from I don't think.

It's also worth bearing in mind that cruising speed uses the battery faster too. 38km at a higher speed is actually not that bad. Most users of this platform will use the engine when at speed as it sips the fuel. If you are at all interested (sounds like you are) then it can be quite fun getting the most from the different power sources for different journeys.

Exactly same happened to me, I recently bought a super iv and I was surprised the range with 100% battery is less as should be.

 

I thought it was the weather and this thread just confirmed 😅

I find the range is getting better, was at 40km this morning, I find driving in cruise control gives the battery a longer again, drive 14km into work this morning and the battery told me I had 32km left so use cruise control. Hope this helps, I haven’t used much petrol since I got it. So far so good

Same here. Filled the tank with petrol, drove +500km and just spent one "line" out of 8 of the fuel level. I drive almost always 100% electric and rarely hybrid, just from time to time to don't be long periods without the petrol engine working...

 

Best car I ever had.

 

Btw, do you know some guidance or tutorial/YouTube how to change all the interior lights for led ones?

I tried and haven't found anything.

Yes it’s a great car, getting wall box charger installed but unfortunately it can only charge from 0 to 100% in 4 hrs, to change the colour of the LED lights is simple I will send on instructions tomorrow when I’m in the car. It’s a fun car to drive, electric to hybrid to sport 217bhp

I do not mean the colour of the led lines in doors, dashboard etc.

 

My mistake. I meant the interior lights, reading lights, glove box lights etc... change these halogen bulbs for led bulbs 🙂

Hi all.

Apologies if I'm out of order for posting in this thread but I assume the contributors are the right people to ask....

 I'm on the verge of purchasing a 2021 Superb IV from a main dealer. 

I do realise that there is no point buying an IV unless one is fanatical about charging it (at home on a low cost rate).

The car has done 22,000 miles and has been standing for 4 or 5 months.  I'm concerned about the battery health.  The main dealer is a battery specialist centre and so I think it sensible to ask them for a diagnostics report on battery health.  This seems very sensible to me.  No response about this request as of yet.  They did replace the 12V battery as this had failed, which adds to my concern.

 

Is there any way I can tell the batteries health apart from actually seeing how many miles I can do on battery alone which is obviously massively affected by temperature, driving style, ancillaries being on etc?

 

I assume Skoda can check battery health since they warrant a minimum 70% after 8 years.

 

I feel an air of caution especially since the car was standing for a while.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hey, I totally understand your concerns. I got my Superb iv in November 2023 and I am totally happy with it. Mine is from mid 2020. Currently has 75.000 km.

 

You are absolutely right, pointless car (as any PHEV) at least you have the chance to charge it everyday. I do have this possibility and I am very satisfied with the car.


Since I had your concerns about the battery, I contacted this user https://www.spritmonitor.de/en/detail/1146051.html and we exchanged a few emails. As you can see his car has 127.033 km and he told me he haven't noticed any "significant" battery degradation.

 

Note the winter affects to the battery range, specially if you connect heated seats, climate with highest ventilator power etc...

 

I drove 1851 km with just one tank of petrol, I like the car very much, its very smooth and pleasant to drive, do not expect a fast car even with the "sport" mode with the 218 hp together, its more a comfortable family car (I got the combi version).

The main battery has a buffer top and bottom.  So it is more protected from over/under charging than many others.  It's also a water cooled system so more thermally stable.  As above though they are affected by ambient temperature.  My Passat is the older setup with a slightly smaller battery and get just under 20 miles in winter and can just pip 30 in summer.  That's with 24 on the car readout after charge in winter and 28 in summer.  I also managed over 2000 miles without putting more petrol in last summer.

The 12v battery charges from the DC-DC system whenever the ignition is on.  They are heaving on the 12v system if not used.  With it sat for that long it will struggle hence the new battery.  The longest I've left mine is a week and not had an issue at nearly 6 years old.

I am just trying to do everything I can to check the health of the car, especially the hybrid battery, before handing over my money.

I'm going to see the dealer shortly and I will again push for a battery health check and a drive with a fully charged battery.

I do realise winter range will be lower than summer.  I would be very disappointed to find out there is some issue after I've bought it.

I've had my IV for two months and I'm getting consistent 26-28km out of a full charge.

 

I was also wondering if my battery had become "dulled" as the distance was less than I'd hoped for, but reading this and other advice on EVs suppose to be expected considering the time of year and temps... looking forward to comparison during the summer months.

 

I do 95% of my journeys on electric only and charge it nightly (I only use the 3 pin cable as seems pointless buying a proper EV charger for such a small battery). 

 

Its a great choice for me as I do short local journeys (school run, work, shops, etc) on electric and longer runs on hybrid without the range anxiety or added journey time of a full EV requiring charging.

Fully agree with everything, I do same use as you, almost always on electric... with the peace of mind that we can do a over 1000 km trip without having to beg for a socket.

 

To be honest I was expecting a bit more range but I got my car in November and im aware cold weather affects to the battery performance in any electric car.
