It's incredible because your home electricity has only 5% VAT, but petrol/diesel has 52.95p/litre fuel duty, and then 20% VAT on top. That brings in £30bn per year, and the government won't let that go easily...

Probably be replaced by charging a fee per mile traveled, current speculation suggest 5.3p per mile

Seems cheap - that would be a good £500 less tax per year on that basis. Reckon it will have to be quite a bit more than that.

I'm sceptical that this could ever be made to work. I can see an uptick in fake MoTs, clocking, etc. Buy an instrument panel from a scrapped car, pop it in before the MoT, do a few 100 miles, then pop the "real" one back in for the rest of the year...

Plenty of ANPR in the ULEZ, the government are very determined to catch all staff who travel 200m into the ULEZ to the Carpark next to the runway at Heathrow!

anyway, best to keep on topic as the phantom charging is definitely a problem on the iV without a known solution.

For which vehicle?

5.3p a mile would only need 3,207 miles to get to £170 ?

VED on my car is £570 at the moment (it will drop when it gets to 5 years old).

I do around 22,000 miles per year at an average of 50mpg which equals about 1,980 litres of fuel. 1980 x 60p tax per litre = £1,188 + £570 VED = £1,758.

22,000 x 5.3p per mile = £1,166.

£1,758 - £1,166 = £592 less.

There was no mention of removing the Expensive car supplement of £395 for the first six years, i assumed that would be added on.

There are approx 33.6 m private cars on the road avge 6,000 miles at .053p

VED is the same for all cars with combustion engines from 2017 regardless of hybrid capabilities.  Granted the alternative (read hybrid) fuel cars are £10 pa cheaper.  That's not a big enough difference to bring VED into the discussion.
