Updating the infotainment system

Featured Replies

Been reading a few recent posts about updating the infotainment system, we have a 5 year old Karoq which as far as I'm aware has never been updated, and isn't 'connected' in any way. How are such systems updated?

Sorry I can't help but do you know which infortainment system you have?

I'm in a similar position. I have a 2022 Karoq Sportline which was bought used from a Skoda dealer.

Mine keeps telling me that there is a software update available but the screen goes blank if I select OK. I refused to pay the renewal to Skoda Connect mid-year so, like yours it's not connected. Is this my problem or should it do it when in range of my home wifi and/or mobile data connected via bluetooth?

I have a Columbus infortainment system - I think! If not it's an Amundsen. Either way, There are no SD card slots. There are however two USB Cs.

As usual, the owners' manual is useless.

Ours is the bolero

So, do you have an SD card slot somewhere?

Don't believe so, if I do I've never found it

Spent about an hour(!) looking when I first had the car. Never found one either.

Folk update systems if they're having issues. A Bolero is a basic system so unless you're having issues then no need to update.

This forum is full of info on how to update your system. You do not need to pay any fee for OTA software updates, Skoda Conect is something different.

You have the newer MIB3 system, that's why there are no SD card slots.

Thanks, no issues on either our Karoq or Kamiq. It's why I buy the most basic car I can, way less to go wrong!

Many thanks for this.

I'd more or less given up searching the web (and this forum) as I was having so little success and therefore had come to the conclusion that Skoda were only interested in forcing people to pay an annual subscription or dealer hourly rates. I guess I've been using the wrong search terms. To be fair, Skoda's own online information gives the distinct impression that those two options were the only way.

To discover mine is MIB3 is a revelation! One of the downsides of buying a used car is the almost complete lack of interest by the dealer's sales staff. They simply do not know (or care) what they're selling.

But thanks again, I'll start another search with renewed enthusiasm!

Well, as a retired IT professional, either I'm losing the plot or there's something pretty odd going on with my Karoq.

I keep getting a message 'software update available' with two screen button options 'OK or 'cancel'. When I press OK the software update screen shows nothing and if I open the drop down menu selecting each option (ie radio, system, other, etc) still shows nothing on the main screen. I have waited for 20 mins with ignition and engine on and still nothing happens.

Following some of @kodiaqsportline's posts I've also tried pulling down the Notification / Favourites screen and this shows no messages at all in the Notification section.

I therefore decided to start at the beginning and check the data signals available at the vehicle - not usually an issue on my drive. I carried out some tests:

(i) Attepted software update using the normal factory-fitted e-sim data connection. Note that I do not have a Skoda Connect subscription in force but this should not be necessary for free updates. The LED adjacent to the SOS buttone remains green. In-car screen remains blank as described above.

(ii) De-selected e-SIM and tried using a mobile hotspot from my phone which had full 4G signal inside the car at this location. No change from (i)

(iii) De-selected e-SIM and tried my home Wifi connection instead - not that strong a signal on my drive but still usable. Still no change from (i).

So, am I being really stupid? What am I missing? I'm pretty sure there is a data signal available via the e-SIM whatever the status of any paid-for subscription.

Is there a go-to web page / location where I can check latest software versions against VIN number and/or definitive instructions for OTA updating?

Any thoughts most welcome.

@sussamb.

If your Karoq is 5 years old, it will pre-date the latest MIB3 systems which download updates online. And if you have the Bolero infotainment system I'm assuming it doesn't have a satnav so there are no maps to update. The radio will be able to find new radio stations for you to save as presets, but you may well not have the pretty icons to identify them. But this is also true for the latest MIB3 radios as the file supplied by Skoda misses many common stations due to commercial restrictions I believe.

Other than that, the dealer should check for any system updates that are required when your car is serviced, although sometimes they will only install the update if you have reported a fault which it will cure.

That link will only update maps.

OTA updates add other functionality, admittedly, few that have any relevance to the way we use our systems. The update but last did provide a very useful feature, the one you rightly find frustrating.

As you say the system can't cope with activiating a download whilst driving, so basically what you have to do it pull over, select gearbox in to Park or neutral  ( it's less complicated if you keep the engine running ) and then press the OK tab onscreen. It's a right faff. The OTA download but last included an update whereby it allowed you to press the OK tab ( or was it 'Download Now', can't remember ) and the system would download i/ update n the background - they way common sense dictates it should.  You're now given three tab options.

If I can remember, the next time a software update is available I'll post a screen shot of the new three tab options.

Tho I can't understand ur situation. If the screen is saying download available then that's a message that should be stored, and as you say should be available at a later date using the pull-down tab at the top of the screen.  Only thing I can suggest is the next time it prompts you with a 'Download available' message - select cancel. That might store the message on your system? Worth a try.  Not 100% sure the OTA updates have anything to do with Skoda Connect. The fact it's promting you that an update is available would suggest to me everything is in order connection wise.

EDIT:  Just remebered. That map update portal should work as you have one of the newer systems. The early MIB3 systems had a fault whereby you couldn't update via the USB posts ( it wouldn't recognise the data ). If that happens then it's a dealer visit as they have to re-install the system software. Pretty sure that shouldn't apply to you tho.

Thanks @kodiaqsportline , your info has been really helpful.

@johnboy60's link requests the VIN and, when I enter mine, gives me a download link for maps and also for radio icons. There is also a field on the page which states that no other software updates are required at the moment.

I'm hoping that by using a USB stick for this update (202345) it will load the OTA update feature you have described. I'm also hoping that once the update has finished, the pull down notification section will be populated. We shall see.

A screenshot's an excellent idea. I'll try to remember to take one before and after this update.

Having gone to all this trouble, it will be interesting to see if the installed SatNav becomes any more accurate and user-friendly. Google Maps via Android Auto has been a life-saver for my wife and I and it may well be that we never go back. It was interesting that the selling dealer's Sales Manager rather ruefully admitted that he never used the installed system on his car!

Hi there

Please can you send me a link with instructions to update my 2018 Karoq?

Many thanks!

Why don't you try the link above that @johnboy60 posted?

Latest experience on my 2022 Karoq:

Some 697 (!) files extracted onto PC from zip file downloaded from Skoda's update webpages. These were then copied on to a 128Gb USB3 stick which has now been left connected to the car for past two days. USB stick definitely recognised as Mirrorlink connection is offered!

Still no notifications in pull down menu and my wife got 'software update available' message during short journey yesterday but ignored it.

Appears to be nothing updated yet.

I understood that's only for map updates and not the infotainment system?

I'm pretty sure it's for all. When I entered my VIN, it gave maps and radio and also told me no other software required updating.

I recently bought a seconda hand MY2020 Skoda Karoq and then updated the SatNav data for its Columbus infotainment as this still looked to be the original  I downloaded the  2024 files from the portal, unzipped them on to an SD card and then put this in the car for the update.  This worked fairly well but the files are big and so the downloads and updates can take up to an hour.  There was an error when updating the car but I tried again and it recovered from the same point which was reasonably robust.  So, my experience is that this is quite doable.

I've got a long journey to make after Christmas so hopefully I'll see some results after that.

There have only been a couple of OTA updates since I posted the above reply but as promised...

Just to confirm, you can now press 'Update now' whilst driving, and the update will take place in the background.
