2010 automatic petrol 1.4l has failed MOT due to leaking transmission. Garage thinks the twin clutch needs replacing. Skoda dealer said it might need new transmission. Best case £1k to worst case £6k. Merry Christmas!

Those were just quotes over the phone. Skoda want to charge £80 just to do the quote, but no slots until next year.

My local garage have recommended a gearbox and clutch specialist, so that is booked in for Friday with quote cost £95 but even once diagnosed, they can't do the work until next year.

So my post is to ask you good people what I could expect.

If just replacing the twin clutch, is my local garage way off with £1,000?

The car is low mileage 53,000 and in great condition. Probably worth around £4,000 before this curve ball.

If Skoda is right and it is a electrical and or whole transmission replacement at £6,000...... then just sell for scrap?

Any help would put our minds to rest. It has not been a good day.

Thanks for reading.

You have not said what if any problems caused you to put the car into the hands of the garage

Editted, I could not see the thread title when reading your posting. My apologies.

A worn clutch would not create a fluid leak, its likely to be a leaking gasket, try asking the MOT garage where they think the leak is coming from

Thanks. I have the car back now. I forgot to add, sometimes the car won't engage coming out the garage in the morning from cold. Like the clutch is slipping. But yes, I will ask the specialist on Friday to check the gaskets.

?

Is it a 1.4 TSI and with DQ200 DSG so a 7 Speed Twin dry Clutch DSG?

Possibly the MCU leaking.

Information helps.

There are 2 threads that might interest you from @automass.   Newer car but the cheap fix never worked.

Sorry

1.4 TSI 7 speed automatic. Sealed unit that never needs to be serviced, I was once told.

It probably had the Oil change and software update since 2014 for free, Service Campaign 34F7.  Sticker in Spare Tyre Well.   It was a world wide recall and a European Service Campaign.

The Serviced for life or oil for life trotted out are probably by those that do not know about the World Wide Recall o DQ200,s 2009-2012.

Likely the cheap fix is no use to your box, that is an accumulator kit.   That is for the issue common on 2013-2015 DQ200,s and there was a Service Campaign on them from 2017.

34H5.  That was a pressure issue and cracked boxes and MCU,s.  Software Update was as a preventive measure.

No matter, but anyone at a Dealership that does not know this stuff are really not a Technician.

Any Auto Specialists should know it.

As it is the diagnosis is important and this not relevant to your issue now, If the original DSG / Parts still fitted to the car.

Thanks all this. Are you saying changing the oil to mineral oil might fix the issue?

No!

I am saying it will not or might never have been serviced, but will or should now have Synthetic oil in, not the mineral from the factory in 2010.

Still leaking though,

losing pressure, maybe just that, or maybe needs clutches replaced, maybe selectors,  so a job for someone with the gear and more than ideas.

Really not a New / Refurbished DSG.

@Crasheror @ApertureSare experienced & have the knowledge.

?

Where are you in the country?

I have near me in Scotland an expert who is a mate that does them, but he will be booked up into the New Year as well.

A member recently had someone in Glasgow fix theirs because he could not get seen in or near Perth for weeks.

OK thanks. Down in Hampshire, so hopefully the recommendation of my local garage will be OK.

Certainly for their gear engagement problems but when the accumulator splits or leak doesn't the fluid remain within the transmission case?

I was hoping for a cheap result but now the gear engagement slippage problem has been revealed somewhat less likely but certainly a fix to get through the MOT should be affordable.

Are you certain that the leaking oil was DSG transmission fluid?

If Skoda is right and it is a electrical

No electrical fault can cause transmission or other oil to leak from the engine/transmission unit.

@Oct10RheaForget all that stuff, i was just telling you so that when others know near nothing you know to go elsewhere.

Yours is 13 years old and leaking.

So the back story.

There was Internal Corrosion and a blown fuse and failures and VW said only in some climates and Synthetic oil. A sulphur issue,

Lose drive, roll to a stop, safe as houses, even in the outside lane of a motorway.

B0llocks and in New Zealand because there were few DQ200,s all got new MCU,s.

In the DQ200,  2 oils, in the MCU and in the Box.

So, is it oil from the MCU???

THAT IS THE QUESTION NEEDING ANSWERED BY THE AUTO PERSON.

Unlike wet clutch DSG,s the same oil,  hence the Oil Services, Filters, was @ 40,000 miles, DQ381,s @ 80,000.  Plenty of those having issues now.
