Very high oil temperatures

Featured Replies

Evening all,

This one has me stumped. I have a 2.0 DSG MKIII Superb and my oil temperature reaches a cool 129 degrees when on carriageways (feathering the throttle - no spirited driving) and sits at about 118 degrees in and around town. I’ve changed the oil and flushed the coolant but to no avail.

Turning the cabin heater on high makes no difference either. It’s also worth mentioning that the fans kick in when they should and the car is not regenerating when checking the oil temps.

Anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this?

Cheers in advance!

With engines in general, when something like an oil pressure or temperature is "wrong" then one of the first things to check is that the sender is accurate. Unfortunately the oil temperature on the panel doesn't indicate until 50 but perhaps you can look at the oil temperature with VCDS or equivalent to see what the oil temperature is showing, compared to ambient  - when the car has been overnight to cool.

Usual I’m sure, put the maxidot to something else and forget about it.

I’m guessing sure you’ve seen no symptoms of anything whatsoever?

 olly smokes that is HIGH!!

normally mine (MY17 DGG-6 220 TSi) would sit around 95-102 degrees.

if i do hard spirited driving, the oil temps go up to 110-ish.

when was the last time u had the oil changed?

is the oil pressure/levels ok?

I fear the oil temp from the VCDS is the same, since coming from the same sensor (I guess).

If you can borrow a laser thermometer, you'll be able to check  if the displayed value is OK or if the sensor is about to fail...

Maybe a VCDS scan could also display 'value out of range' or something like that, which could mean that the sensor is not OK or about to fail...

FWITW, it could be something simple to check.

What is the coolant temperature showing as?

Most likely sender malfunction, can be checked using VCDS on a cold engine where the oil temp should correspond to the ambient temp more or less.

If that shows ok then oil cooler not functioning is the next possibility but given the conditions you describe and the current temperatures in Sussex its implausible that the oil could get to anywhere near that temperature unless the level is really low, the oil level sensor faulty and the oil cooler not functioning.

Yes it is from the same sensor, that is the point. But I am hoping that whilst the panel display inhibits a reading below 50c, the actual data available from VCDS might show down to much lower (ambient) temperatures.

I think the data is simply unavailable when below 50C, because it’s just out of calibration .
Theoritically, you could get a value but it would not correspond to anything physical. Manufacturer willingly truncate the sensors temperature range to reach a better accuracy around the operating range.

I'd tend to disagree, based on this graph that I made a few years ago of the coolant and oil temperatures and oil level during a short journey and then for a while after shutdown, out of curiosity.

2003 Polo, BBY engine.  The data is available on that car, but yes, couldn't vouch for the accuracy, although it tracks the coolant temperature quite believably. X-axis is time in seconds, I reckon.

Good morning!

I have the same problem with my Yeti 2.0 tdi since 4 years ago,but the problem appears only in the summer time after running on highway at 130-140 km/h.

Often it is ended with a "turn off engine "error in the display ,see the att. photo.

Now I'm trying to solve it...How did you fixed yours please?

Hi all!

Meanwhile the problem with the oil pressure message was solved.

At the first we tried with another oil cooler (Nissens was on the engine and replaced with a used oem) but no change on the pressure error or high oil temperatures.

The service guy, after digging more inside the motor, found that the oil sump was clogged and because of that some finger follower set ( https://vehiclelifetimesolutions.schaeffler.com/en/catalog/auto-parts/engine/engine-timing/rocker-arm-finger-follower/accessory-kit-finger-follower/p-TA-3320-4230076100) was worn, so he replaced this set together with some seals and stuff around the upper part of the engine & injectors...but he said the main cause for the oil pressure error was the clogged oil sump.Tested the car few times on high way on hot whether and no error appeared but I observed that the oil temperature is rising to 130 Celsius on long highway trips at 130-140 km/h.The service guy said that this is normal...What do you think?

Wow, that was a bad blockage in the oil pick-up!
