Attaching front number plate to vRS

Featured Replies

Has anyone stuck their front number plate to the vRS number plate surround (as opposed to using screws)?

One of my pet hates is big rusty screws on a number plate, and the green border on the dealer supplied plate isn't that great either, so I bought some plain new plates.

Stuck them on yesterday with number plate pads and the front one was lying on the ground this morning:(

It seems the pad didn't stick to the plastic very well. Since the holder is kind of curved I just used a pad at each end and nothing in the middle.

Has anyone successfully stuck their front plate on? If so where did you place the pads?

Cheers.

Same thing happened to me,found it lying in garage. If you clean it well and try to apply some pressure for hour or som, more chance of it staying in place.

Think its because its curved slightly rather than being flat.

If you use grey pads from Halfrauds and use 4/5 they will stick on plates good and proper even on a curved surface....Once on and cured, try and pull them off

What about using a number plate surround? You could then place the numberplate in the surround and screw this in. It would then be properly secured, but you wouldn't see any screws :rubchin:

I've seen them on sale in various places, motor factors and eBay for example. You could get one in carbon fibre effect, silver or black perhaps?

I use halfords pads on mine and they've been fine. You have to use thicker pads on the front plate though due to the curvature. Halfords sell special thicker ones made for this. I put one in the middle and 1 at each end.

I used stainless screws when i replaced my cracked front.

I allways used pads and a liquid primer. Could tow from the thing then.

(may not actually be true, try this at your own peril)

I have just ( 4 weeks ago ) stuck my plates with

double sided tape and they are still on

but I put 2 at each end and 3 in the middle for the front

god knows what will happen when I have to replace the

plate ... probably need a respray :(

I used really strong velcro (this stuff will hold 7kg), plates will never move and the flexibility deals with the curve of the bumper.

I had mine colour coded at a local paint shop because against a silver car it looked like an after thought.

The pads stick to the painted surface perfectly, never had the same problem again

Several options are available.

1 Put No plate in hot water and tape ends together to form slight curve in plate.

2 Use stainless steel screws Grade A4 available from any good fixings supplier, note rear screws are same as used on mercedes also stainless steel cost £1 per set.

3 Only use double sided tape fit for purpose from Halfords.

4 If you must drill No plate only drill from back, drilling from front causes dacking to become detached from rest of plate and allow water to penetrate.

Strange word dacking sorry i mean backing.

Or use the plastic screws available in white and yellow and black, although whi knows where from I've just seen them on cars.

I used Pritt double sided sticky things and they held fine for a year till the car and I left the country!!

I did use about 30 on each number plate though!!

'No more Nails' Double sided tape from B&Q is the dog's dangly bits!! If you cant get the real stuff from Halfords

I asked for the front plate to be stuck on when I bought the car - the dealer refused saying too many had fallen off...
