Tuning and mapping

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm looking for advice on the best tuning and or mapping companies that specialise in engine and DSG performance enhancing, any sensible suggestions?

Just like mechanics, most tuners are clueless and either flashing a poor quality generic map made by someone online, or changing 1/3 of the individual maps they should be. Even the companies with a proper rolling road don't do a good job half the time, even if the vehicle makes more power - it doesn't mean it is done safely or properly.

REVO is one of the best as they have a large team and test their tunes on lots of cars before approving them and selling them. They also let you choose between low and high boost depending on if you want longevity or power. If you don't have a nearby reseller APR are not bad either (but known for aggressive tunes killing turbos quickly),  RacingLine are worth considering as well.

Revo quote £480 to increase power from 184ps to 217-236 ps (depending on boost you select), and from 380nm to 468-515nm. I believe it shaves almost a second off the 0-60, a petrol will always be faster but the map does make a marked improvement.

To complement the revo discussion above: don't go chasing peak power. Often a high peak power comes with bad delivery through the rev range. A good map with improve the peak power but produces it in a smooth way with a good increase across the revs.

As for companies, go for Revo, Racingline, TVS, APR. They all have their differences. TVS is expensive but a very good map. Revo and APR have a good reputation for getting the most from a car safely. Racingline don't go hunting for power but have a really smooth delivery.

If money no object I'd go for TVS.

I would definately investigate Darkside Developments based in Barnsley.  They are amazing when it comes to performance tuning.  Re: TDI engines.  Your engine will probably make 190bhp from standard, but just to let you know that if you want *reliable* improved performance, the TDI engines probably won't make anymore than about 220-230bhp without some serious hardware improvements.

I had mine done by Darkside for my remap and I've ended up with 206hp and 475nm.

I'm still able to get the MPGs into 50's when I'm just munching miles on the motorway, but it's certainly a noticeable boost in power when you stamp on the throttle.

Compared to when I had the DTUK tuning box on, it's not regen'ing at the same rate and the power delivery is much more linear, rather than on or off.

They race TDI's and prepare their own cars, so that place know the score with what are safe limits to tune to.

The dpf is another good point. A bad map will likely lead to increased regenerations at the very least. Worst case it will block the filter in short time.

A good map may well be cleaner than the stock one depending on how you drive so the dpf could last.

Quick query about Revo remap - does it make a big difference to insurance premium?

TFYH

A couple of insurers are represented on here, so give them a shout and see what the difference is.

There is also a chance that some insurers will decline to insure a modified vehicle.

As I only became a Skoda driver quite recently I have no annual premium with which to compare so was wondering how much extra it was for people who've alreadty gone this route.

In that case, I'd give yourself 12 months to familiarise yourself with the vehicle and ensure it's running right before you add the variable of a remap.

That way, if something fails in the first 12 months of ownership, you'll know it wasn't caused by the remap.

It'll also give you a chance to investigate the different maps, get a good baseline of your MPG, and perhaps get an initial rolling road run to see what power you've got to start with.
