New ball joint faulty?

Featured Replies

Local garage popped this on while I was having a couple of tyres recently, has the rubber boot thing come adrift already? Looks different to the older one on the other side.

I have to say that joint certainly doesn't look as if it has been disturbed recently.

It looks like the boot is split, you'll need to get under there and check using your hands, not just your eyes.

Maybe they just reused the old nut? The offside is well rusty compared to this.

I'm not doubting that they changed it but it looks like the boot has slipped out of the groove in one place and off.

Even if the old nut had been reused (inadvisable as it appears to be a 'nylock' type) I'd expect to see corrosion disturbance on the points.  To me, that joint boot looks like it has split.

Does look a bit old due to the rust starting but could be a really cheap aftermarket one. My local garage stopped fitting cheap ones as they only lasted about six months and customers would come back and complain. Cheap ones are fine to get it through an MOT if your selling the car on but fit decent quality if your keeping it. If they said they replaced it then pop back in and get them to check it. It does look like the rubber has been damaged
