MK2 Octavia vrs petrol chain noise and vibration coming from chain cover

Featured Replies

Hi all - whist just looking for a coolant leak under the hood of my car I noticed the chain cover was being really noisy and vibrating a good'n. The car is a 2011 MK2 petrol VRS  with 145k on the clock and I've owned it from new. In 2015 @ 76k it had new engine replacement due to chain tensioner failure done at Skoda on a FOC. What else could this be other than chain? could there be anything else in the case that would produce vibration?

I will try and take a video tomorrow in the light and post it - I will be also topping my oil up as I noticed its about mid way between min and max and I like to keep it around the max level as I know these cars need it, topping up the oil may even resolve the vibration and noise - I think that's me hoping more than anything.

Anyone local to Basingstoke who knows there way around these engines maybe useful for diagnosing this issue as I don't have a local Skoda garage anymore.

Thank you for reading and any comments are welcome.

I think you would be better posting in the Skoda Octavia Mk II (2004 - 2013) forum as this one is less well visited and generally about scan tool type matters. - https://www.briskoda.net/forums/forum/28-skoda-octavia-mk-ii-2004-2013/

I don't know if you'll find my other comments welcome but here they are - generally for stuff on car repairs best to video with the phone at landscape rather than portrait as that will get a wider perspective and more information into the frame, when diagnosing turn the radio off as generally it's less distracting and you can hear more (perhaps not need in this case though).  Cleanliness of the oil is more important that having it right up to maximum (regular timely oil & filter changes and you'd want a good, or very good, oil for VRS type driving).

Take a photo or leave the coolant level as it is until tomorrow's (today's?) video (and you could leave the oil level too for that video).  Mention about both in your post and how much oil and coolant has been lost over what period of time/mileage/type of use.

The combustion test appears to be fine, I assumed you warmed the engine before test, best check is oil temp as coolant gauge is usually biased to 90 (unless you have a scan tool that reads various temperatures at various points).  Sorry topping up will do nothing for that noise but perhaps it's not as bad situation as you might fear.

Good luck.

Your chain has gone slack due to the tensioner failing the same happened to me last year its a loud ticking noise

Recaro - this was my first thoughts but it had a new chain and tensioner 70k ago but there's nothing to say its failing again, I have toped up the oil level to max and driven it about for a few miles and the noise has gone away for now but I will keep a very close eye on it.  I will update as I go and thanks for your comments.
