New generation steering wheel swap

Featured Replies

I have a Skoda Superb 2015 L&K and had desire to install a new sport 3 spoke steering wheel from new Skoda :)

Parts:

1. Steering wheel from Skoda Octavia A8, bought used, like new ~93 EUR

2. Airbag from Skoda Octavia A8, like new ~185 EUR

3. Steering Wheel Plaque / Badge (5E3419685G041 — black, 5E3419685FDPJ — SportLine) cars-equipment For 2 spoke wheel it's different

4. Lin adapter

I know two solutions one is from cars-equipment 200 EUR

and another one that I bought with ability to code some buttons like TravelAssist, now twice cheaper then first one

Removal is very simple, turn wheel to 90 degree and unplug with short screwdriver; and then from another side.

Disconnect battery.

New one with Lin adapter

Final result

All buttons work except TravelAssist(top right), because 2015 Superb doesn't have it. But I switched it to Phone by changing coding.

Very good thread and guide.

the only thing id note is the main screw for the steering wheel. Don’t put fresh loctite on it! The correct method is to mark the face of it with a centre punch and refit with no fresh loctite. The screw is good for 5 reuses (a centre punch per reuse) and only after that does it need replacing.

and have you got a link to the codable cheaper lin adapter?

I see a lot of questions how to make work heated wheel button work:

Climate - Coding - [LO]_Heated_steering_wheel_version => "[VO]_LRH_Gen_2_mod" or "[VO]_LRH_Gen_2_mod_with_longpush"

In case you have a clock spring with heated wheel option.

I'm thinking of doing this on Octavia 3 -2015, the lin adapter that is specially needed is the same for Superb and Octavia?

Sorry, quick Q, I’ve done this mod for a client but you mention you changed the travel assist button to phone via coding? Can you advise how? I have a client with 2019 Superb and VC and I have every button working except VIEW button so if I can code to get that going it would be great.

Thanks

What adapter did you install?

If you're capable, you can create you're own adaptor very cheaply. Much like this person has: https://wirer.sk/o3_volant22-modul/

Should be doable for £20-30 by the looks. More info from the codes creator here: https://github.com/GabrielMastny/Skoda_2021MUFUSteeringWheel_Converter/blob/main/README.en.md

I don't have any first hand experience but it all looks simple enough...

I was curious and assembled all this on Arduino. This adapter works with the CAN bus, intercepting commands from the GW and sending the necessary message based on them without canceling the original message.

There’s a nuance for VC owners: the View function can only be assigned to the TravelAssist button. If you assign it to the lower right or left arrow, it will work in 1 out of 20 cases, as these buttons in the VC open the central menu. As a result, the VC cannot simultaneously change the view and open the central menu.

It’s possible to assign the View function to other buttons, but it would be wired. For example, assigning it to the voice assistant button would trigger the voice assistant and change the VC view simultaneously, and so on.

To summarize, if possible, it’s better to choose a module based on LIN. LIN modules work inline with the bus and simply replace messages.

But Arduino modules much cheaper.

Hi there, @zacko_O did you use this LIN adapter? https://skoda-acc.com/Skoda-steering-wheel-buttons-adapter-Full-S0001F

How is this setup, got a 2020 Superb IV with previous version steering wheel and bought a 2022 Sportline steering wheel. Is this LIN adapter plug and play or do you need anything extra to code it. Thx for the reply!

Hey,

never used this one.

Currently, I use this

Hi Zacko, thx for the reply. Seems like a decent fix. One question, do you have pictures where either of these locations are in the car? The Gateway connector or by rewiring the connector of the steering column electronics control unit (J527).

Gateway located above pedals

(J527) - is a steering wheel tape unit

Did the conversion today, must say easy peezy. One removing the airbag without power was a challenge... But new steering wheel mounted and everything works except for the travel assist. Have to dig into that with coding the adapter. Will make some pictures tomorrow. Very happy with all the help from here!

Hi @Robijn ! Could you tell me please which adapter did you use? The one from cars-equipment(the white one) that is 200 euros? Thanks !

You can send this guy an email: [email protected]

Very easy install and modifiable.

Robijn does travel assist work correctly for you, have you coded yet? Can you send a few photos? I would like to buy this module from this person [email protected], what is the price of this module?

Hi @SashaGarce,

(Sorry — I know this is slightly off-topic from the original question you were replying to, but I was hoping to get your advice on something related to one of your retrofit projects.)

I’ve seen many of your brilliant retrofit posts — from reversing cameras to virtual cockpits — and I’m always really impressed by the depth of your knowledge and the quality of your work.

I own a 2018 (68 reg) Skoda Superb Combi 2.0 TDI DSG SE L Executive, and I’m planning to retrofit a reversing camera. Before I start, I wanted to check whether there’s a spare or unused fuse slot in the fuse box that’s suitable for powering the camera installation.

Any tips or pointers you could share would be hugely appreciated. Thanks again for all the help and inspiration you bring to the community — your posts have been incredibly useful to read.

Best regards,
mazzy960
