Oil pump replacement

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have Skoda Fabia MK1 2006 1.4 gasoline where the red oil pressure light have been coming frequently to the board. Oil level is ok I checked it. I am doubting that oil pump is faulty as I also hear weird noise coming from the engine. Could you please tell is it just located under the crank if I remove the oil sump/pan? Is it easy to access? I will try to replace it myself but I really cannot find material online on the matter.

TIA

Have you looked at the oil pressure switch. Can leak oil through the connector when it fails, easy to see if you just disconnect it and see if it's oily inside?

Yes the connector is ok and I actually changed the whole pressure switch to rule that out.

It could be a broken wire.

I really think that the issue is either a broken oil pump or clogged oil strainer in front of the pump but I don't know how easy to access those parts from underneath the car.

@ElNinoDo you know the engine code?

Yes, it's probably the strainer then.

Is it manual or automatic transmission?

This thread may be helpful to you if it's a 16-valve engine with manual transmission, and has the alloy sump type.

Not a very nice job to do on the driveway.  Be very careful after the sump is off, not to headbutt the end of the dipstick tube. I did and it hurt a lot! Could have been very nasty in an eye socket.

Exhaust has to be dropped down out of the way on this sump type. Not sure if it is also the case for steel sump version, or automatic transmission.

Thanks a lot. Do you happen to have some pictures of the engine block from below after removing the sump? I just want tp see where the oil pump is located before starting to do the job. And yed my car is 16 valve 1.4 with manual transmission.

No, but it's up at the cambelt end. The only pic I can find shows only the middle area.

I'll try to find a diagram for you.

Item 14 is the oil pump.

Appears to require cam belt, crank sprocket and sump removal to change.

Bet there's nothing wrong with it though.

Do you know if the oil separator on the back of the engine block has ever been inspected or changed? That has an impact on oil quality when blocked up, which is why the strainer on my Polo there was blocked, I expect.

Is there an attachment or something you tried to upload here?

I just checked now also the car and it seems that the exhaust pipe is going through the sump in an annoying way...

No worries, thanks a lot. When you were dismantling the sump was it enough for you lifting the car and keep it standing on Jacks or should it be lifted all the way up on a lift?

Quite high on axle stands was adequate. Not comfortable though.

The image I did find of the crank showed that I also removed the right side driveshaft. Not sure if that was essential, or just recommended.

Thanks for your patience and assistance. I will try to do the job myself and let's hope it will go well.
