Strut mount and spring is shot

Featured Replies

Hey all, noticed a knocking from the suspension and turns out that the spring and strut mount on the front near side is gone.

What are the current options with sorting out the suspension? I use my VRs as a cheap daily and don’t want to spend a crazy amount but at the same time I don’t want to be bouncing down the country lanes.

I’m thinking that it’s probably best to change shocks springs mounts both sides.

How difficult of a DIY would this be changing both front shocks springs strut mounts (usually just do the basic maintenance pads discs oil etc)

Any suggestions?

Gone where?

Joking aside who says it has gone?

From your description it will most likely be the bearing which is a seperate part from the strut mount although often sold together.

It’s still with the car but ready to go on holiday at any point I imagine!

when I push down on the suspension I can from the bonnet section the strut mount area moving around. Also on inspection the at the very top of the spring you can see it’s snapped.

Throw a complete secondhand strut on there for ease and cheepniss.

Based on @sepulchrave suggestion, find matched struts and you can avoid buying spring compressors.

Managed to get it all off!

the m14 bolt is looking quite worn and I’m having difficulty sourcing a new one.

does anyone have a part number ?

Hi all, well I managed to get the secondhand strut on and all fitted nicely thinking how sweet of a job it was, however…

The drive shaft has popped out and I’m a bit unsure what to do next. All the rubber boots are in tact and the brake rotor spins freely and so I’m a bit unsure where it has pulled away.

any advice where to go from here? Should I dismantle everything take the strut out again and wiggle it back in?

I’ve made a right **** out of a simple job!

To be precise, are you saying that you can turn the wheel hub and brake rotor and the driveshaft does not turn?

If so does the driveshaft retaining bolt rotate with the hub?

Did you withdraw the driveshaft to allow the necessary downwards movement of the steering knuckle to disengage the strut?

Just had another look as it’s been pouring down with rain

the outer cv joint seems to have popped out.

I’ve wiggled it around and managed to get it back in, should this be okay now?

seems that it happened when I was trying to wrestle the strut in and out.

Should be fine.

Managed 100 miles and it popped out again pulling off a junction!

some kind lads in a VRs stopped and towed me home

any thoughts?

I thought it would have been retained with a circlip or tempered wire spring clip (sorry can't recall the name) and wondered whether it had been dislodged when presumably your hammering pulled out the shaft, they can usually be re-used but you should have had equal resistance to refitting the shaft, i.e. you would have needed a hide mallet or similar to get it back together, when you said it went back in with some wiggling I thought it might detach but Pete who knows far more about Fabias than I ever will was of the opinion that it would be OK.

Sep, bottom end of spring sits in cup on shock. Apart from bolts through wing, what holds top end of shock in place in bearing. I'm looking at diy shock/ top mount in summer as original kit is 20/year old /135k, a couple of new springs and a not of miles over tank traps.

The entire top mount, spring and bearing assembly is held on by the Nyloc nut screwed on to the damper rod, 19mm hex from memory.

Sep many thanks. I've worked on lever arm front and different sorts of rear, but I've not worked on McPherson fronts ( yet). Its nice to know how its held together.

So its spring compressor to start with.

I'm like other old GPO blokes who were taught by GPO garage about van mtce , and how to fix vans on roadside
