Approved used 2015 VRS, can anyone give me some advice please?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone I'm new so please be kind lol.

I need a new car for the mrs, have 15k budget, she does 10-12k miles per year. Needs to be auto, heated seats and full phone connectivity. I always look to what taxi drivers use for relaibility so that's bought me to a Skoda Octavia.

I've found this one near to where I live in Telford, approved used. I really don't trust myself spending this much money on a second hand car as I don't know what I'm looking at, so approved used is my preffered choice.

Are there any big expensive things that can go wrong with these, common failures and the like? Thanks in advance, here is the car.

Wecome.

Low mileage.   Not many miles covered since the last MOT.

DSG not even due a oil change to 40,000 miles, but has it been done?

?

Are you sure it is a Skoda Approved Used Car?

Where does it show or say that?

Is the Servicing to the Recommendations, Guidelines, Schedule or specification?

So how is the Service History.

Other than Oil & Filter Changes,

has the brake fluid been changed one or twice as it should be by now.

DSG problems can be an issue, particularly in regards to correct servicing, depending on type fitted.

I personally would hope the DSG had been serviced at 4 year old  and would expect the second service to be due this year,

Potentially 8 years without being serviced, look for evidence in it's service history. Not covered by a service plan from what i have read it is classed as Maintenance and an additional cost of between £200/300

Make sure you drive the car before purchase.

If you notice it changing gear other than the rev counter changing, no jerks etc. i would keep looking

The DQ250 DSG has never required servicing at 4 years.  The Schedule is at 40,000 miles.

The car is 8 years old and still not at 40,000 miles.

I have no doubt that the DSG will probably last to the end of the warranty period and do the 40,000 miles without servicing.

But after 8 years the oil in that mechatronic unit could be sludge compared to fresh oil

There will be a few losses and upset customers complaining due to failure. But loads saved on the service plan inclusive prices.

But once the £4,000 gamble is mine i would be making sure it had been serviced and pay the £200/300 every 4 years instead. But i have never been lucky in the Casino either.

Fine as far as it goes, but I've never known a taxi (or private hire) driver with a vRS.

Maybe if people understood how hard and fast the mechatronic unit works, with no jerking all you see is a flick of the rev counter and hear the engine note change. They will understand the value in keeping the oil clean.

This video actually explains about why to keep your foot firmly on the brake pedal at lights. neutral if it's going to be long, but when he drives you see the speed of the "smooth" gear changes

Lovely that the cars like his with a DQ381 has 'Autohold' so no need for sitting foot on brake pedal.

@Stonekeeper  There are hundreds of members on here with DQ250 DSG,s and i wonder just how many had their cars DSG serviced because it was 5, 6, 7 or 8 year old but not yet @ 40,000 miles.

?

Have you had DSG,s and changed the oil by days / years rather than by Miles?

The Wet Clutch DSG,s are the same oil in the Box and MCU.

It is DQ200,s that has 2 oils and no service schedule / intervals, but some do change the oils.

As it is would not be leaving a DQ381 to 80,000 miles before servicing.

Thanks for the replies everyone. It is definitely apporved used I've emailed the dealer and they confirmed. They said it also has not had the gearbox oil and filter changed. I will hopefully go and look at it Saturday, if I want it I'll insist they change the oil in it for me.

Apart from the potential gearbox failure (and how much is the repair?), is there any other big problenms these cars pose?

DQ250 DSG issues are rare.  But i would have them service it.

If it is a 12 month warranty they have on the car they should have it serviced as per guidelines, recommendations and schedule and the DSG is near enough that and you should not be needing to have it in for servicing in 6 months time or less.

Matching Tyres, as least by pairs.

No chips of the windscreeen.       Full Body Inspection record or inspection now for the Corrosion Warranty.

If a one former keeper car they took in then all simple enough.  They must be happy with the Service Record, so have them show you it.

This will give you an idea of what the guidance is.

This is the Fixed Servicing regime.  There are inaccuracies.   & leaving a Air Filter without checking for years is just crazy.

The DQ250 DSG is at 40,000 miles.  Not all DSG,s are.

(The Water pump and cam belt might well have been changed on a TDI)

Tough choice.

I prefer the VRS engine, but the Sportline is the FL model and so has a lot of improvements over the older MK3. That digital dash is nice. (Not sure about the black headlining, though.)

I found the 150PS 2.0TDI a bit gutless to drive, but you can perk it up with a remap.

Of the two cars on offer, I think the Sportline is better value for money.

I never commented on from West End Edinburgh as i am not a fan of them.  As for them and Full Main Dealer Service Histories.  That can be a history of what they have not done if they are the Main Dealer.

The car look nice.

But as with any used car, go on condition.

A car might be showing a Flexible / Variable service schedule history, but a owner can maybe have done interim oil changes.

Look for the car that might not need much spending on for a couple of years.

Properly serviced, good tyres and brakes, wiper etc etc.

An ex fleet car might well be well maintained & fitted with good tyres, new discs etc.

Arnold Clark and others might fit any old 1 replacement tyre.
