Insurance cost

Featured Replies

Here in Spain I just got my renewal for my 2011 TSI Active and it's €341 (£286) up from €325 (£273), that's for comprehensive with breakdown cover, no mileage limits, numerous other benefits, and with €300 (£252) excess so not displeased.

As it's 36c outside I'm staying cool indoors with a cold beer and the AC on and out of idle curiosity I decided to punt my info into GoCompare and the first thing I found was that nobody would quote for comprehensive so I knocked it down to TPFT and the quotes came in ranging from £385 (€459), followed by a handful rising to around the £500 mark (€596), then advancing into the thousands culminating in an eye watering £3604 (€4293)!

OK I know different companies target different demographics etc. but come on, we're probably as low risk as it gets with no accidents or claims for over 20 years and I put in our old UK address which was also very low risk and limited the mileage to 6000 so how can anyone possibly come up with £3604?

Glad I live in Spain where our living costs are amply covered by two basic UK state pensions with money left over each month, I couldn't afford to live in UK anymore.

Agree UK insurance costs are a joke at times .... our Yeti is £277 pa 2 drivers (both retired,) fully comp, full no claims (20+ years) and no convictions, The German Stuka is £356 for the same but some companies quoted £4125 for the same car, obviously didn't want the business .... don't understand personally ... feels a bit of a con and taking you for all you can get 🤪 the way of the world nowadays.

Insurance is a legal requirement yet the Government still taxes it.

Rip Off Britain!

I'm reading the OP like the following:

Suckers, they're paying over the odds whilst I've retired to Spain.

Without the uncalled for and unnecessary "suckers" you're not wrong!

I suspect that AI means that the Insurers recognize a snide online comparison search for insurance.

They make an offer that then would lead to more questions before cover actually available to purchase.

Is an Active a UK spec trim level that came up on the site?

Strange no quotes for TPFT, but then many do not do that cover, and if they do it is no cheaper than Full Comp.

There was no quote for comp and as I had no UK reg. number to enter I had to tick 'haven't bought car' then define the car, other than for make there were no other drop down choices.

I was paying around €100 TPO, they kept gradually putting it up, increasing it for a change of vehicle (MK1 to MK2 Octavia) even though it was a lower group  then the company said they would no longer insure me due to a "strategic change of direction" and I found that a broker, a paid intermediary was 25% cheaper than my last renewal and insuring through the same company!!! - Go figure.

I am still with them on the Yeti, still the basic TPO cover and limited mileage and its crept towards the €200 mark now, if I could get fully comp cover for what you are paying I would do so, I will check around again at renewal time.

£385 does not sound so shocking given what I have read about people policies shooting up at renewal time, oh wait, that was for TPFT cover, something must have been amiss for the system to not offer Fully Comp, perhaps the system knew there had been no record of you being insured in the UK for 20 years, maybe thats the level of cover and price you would be offered when returning with the Spanish proof of NCB?

The key part is probably the not offering fully comp cover.

My ex UK Yeti has had to be insured as an "Active" or whatever weird name they used for the models sold into the French market, the DRIRE registered it as such because they did not have "Outdoor" on their database, the insurers dont either so its insured as an Active and thats what the Carte Grise says it is.

A couple of problems with that, the Active (or whatever it is) has a higher puissance fiscale, the horsepower tax, which is related to real horses power and not the engine power which meant it cost me more in registration fees, the model also has a 5 speed and not 6 speed gearbox, these things would bite me in the butt if it were written off but as I have TPO insurance I let sleeping dogs lie.

31° outside, AC on inside, no beer as I'm teetotal.

On the Yeti (in my profile anyway) I pay £168 fully comprehensive with breakdown cover (but I did receive £30 cashback to arrive at that figure). The Subaru is now a classic car and is actually cheaper!

Yet another reason for holding onto my Impreza Turbo - my premium went down again despite me increasing my 'agreed value' for each of the last 4 years. Just went out for a quick blast - hilarious after the Yeti (which is great)!
