Power Mirror Retrofit

Featured Replies

Hello,

I don't think this has been posted anywhere else, I've had a look but can't find any information (but apologies if I'm duplicating!)

I have a 2021 Skoda Octavia SE Technology which I've recently bought second hand, and I think it’s safe to say, it’s my favourite car I've ever owned.

There's only one thing I wish it had - power folding mirrors. I park it on the street outside the house, and whilst I've been lucky, I've seen others with their mirrors clipped by passing cars. Its not a deal breaker - I know I can just fold them in, but my old car (a Corsa) had power fold and it was just something I didn't have to think about.

So, looking on eBay, the cost of two power folding mirrors and a replacement switch for the driver’s door isn't that much plus, it would be a fun upgrade I could maybe do myself.

So, my question - do manufacturers use a standard wiring set up, across models, with wiring already in place for optional extras to be installed further down the production line? As in, would it be possible to plug in new components, and have them work - or will there need to be extra wiring involved to make something such as power mirrors work?

Even if the wiring was in place, I'm guessing they would need  to be coding to make them fold on locking etc? This is probably a bit beyond a novice DIYer, but curious if anyone else done this, or something similar.

Thanks!

Welcome to Briskoda and pleased to hear you like your Octavia. They are indeed nice cars.

I’ve never attempted the sort of DIY job you’re thinking of, but my guess is that the wiring is likely to be there, and yes, folding of mirrors would need coding in.

Perhaps the guys at @East_Yorkshire_Retrofits (sponsors of this site) could advise and I’m sure they’d be able to do the job for you - at a cost of course.

In the meantime, enjoy the car…

That's a really good point.

I've been reading posts on here about retrofitting a reverse camera, and @East_Yorkshire_Retrofits came up a lot. I'm already thinking of taking a family trip north sometime!

Glad my theory about the wiring didn't sound too wishful thinking too!

It would be fairly reasonable to think that it would be cheaper to have a level of commonality in components like wiring looms, so it is possible that wiring is already in place - although I have seen references for having to run cabling for retro-fitted reversing cameras, so may not always be the case.

They never install unused wiring, they must have done the maths and found it to be more cost effective to have X amount of different harnesses with varying options 🙂

It’s possible you’ll need replacement door control modules, not all of them support power folding mirrors

The wiring you’ll need will come with the replacement mirrors, and plugs into the door control modules

The more I'm looking into it, the more it looks a bit beyond me! 🤣

But, hypothetically, how much would this cost if the professionals were to do it?
