Advice On First Oil & Filter Change/Jacking points & Which Trolley Jack to buy?

Featured Replies

Hi, I am about to carry out my first oil and filter change. I am after some pointers on correct jacking points and what trolley jack to buy. I have bought a pair of axle stands, wheel chocs and a half inch socket set, as yet I have no trolley jack.

Thanks

Personally I prefer to use ramps for doing oil changes, or anything involving crawling under the car. I think they are safer and quicker.

Spline key or socket for undertray and a good oil filter wrench, i use the alloy set of the bay 1/2 inch drive fits them ok new sump plug or washer jack up car with the trolley pad on large cross member then slide stand onto chassis part just behing and away you go, don't forget to get the oil at operating temp brfore draining and don't forget to refit sump plug and filter before filling up

🤣 Seriously have people actually done that ?

A tip I'd add is on filling fill to just showing on the dipstick until you get the car on level ground. Then once all level do the final top up. I ended up overfilling my Yeti once due to the slight slope of my drive. Vacuuming some out was a pain.

I'm not sure about the filter, but the sump plug has been omitted yes. 2 or 3 gallons of oil later...

You don't need to jack the car up, just loosen the sump plug, slide the drain pan under and remove the loose plug and leave it to drain, then replace the plug and move the pan under the filter, remove that and drop it in the pan, clean up, fit new filter hand-tight and refill with fresh oil. I did mine last weekend and mine is lowered 30mm, still did it without a jack!

Oil filters up top are nice and easy, just do not make a mess.

Oil filler cap off and dip stick out before starting draining.

See the pinned thread at tip of this section, Filter warning.

2013 1.2 TSI so 3.9 liters VW 504 00 / 507,  5w 30 FS III Fixed or Variable Service interval or if you want, VW502 00, so 5w 40 FS for fixed service oil and filter changes.
