Yes

Sport enables more aggressive throttle, steering, ACC, DSG, etc.

ECO enables less aggressive throttle, ACC, DSG, coasting, etc.

Normal is somewhere between Eco and Sport.

If you can't feel the difference between the settings then it's likely not working.

Does it use more fuel in sports mode

Not necessarily if you are just driving in an easy manner and getting up to speed and just getting on with a journey.

Reset the Average MPG and check yourself after a bit of driving in different modes and see what it is indicating you are getting.

I’d say it depends on the cars spec. DSG and/or DCC yes there will be a difference.  A manual without DCC, total gimmick. Just modulate your right foot.

If yours is DSG then it will use more fuel. It holds onto the lower gears much more compared with normal & eco even if you're light footed. It's also eager to down shift.

I've no experience of driving a manual with these modes

Cheers people car is manual

In a manual the mpg will be pretty much the same in all modes, just depends how you drive it.

Sports mode will stiffen the steering, set the vaq diff (if you have it) so the highest setting, and stiffen the throttle response. It will also turn the soundaktor volume to full.

So we can forget most or all of that with a 1.6 TDI.
