Fabia VRS vs Porsche 993TT = Embarrassing

Featured Replies

Had a little pay with my mate in his 993 turbo on sunday.

From a standing start i got the jump on him (or maybe he was just playing) and was ahead for 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

At which point he went past like i was in reverse  A few moments later he was a speck on the horizon.

The difference between a "Brisk" road car and "Fast" car is astonishing to see and feel. If i can manage to host a video i will post a link for others to appreciate.

I guess thats 533PS and 729NM for you though.....

Note to self the VRS is only Brisk - Not Fast

(and no this wasn't on the public road before the PC people start moaning)

I think the gearing is against you on standing starts with 993's. My mate has a Carrera 4 which is 4WD, but to get a quick launch you have to give it some beans and be pretty brutal.

Another mate has a 1975 911 3.0 Turbo and that can do 80mph in 1st!!! Says something about the gear ratios!

I had a blast with an older chap in an X5 3.0D coming off a roundabout on the A303 in my 2.0 OctyTDI DSG. I Passed him and held the lead up to the legal limit. He must've been gutted at being passed by a skip with a heated rear window, but hey ho.

Other cars I own are much faster, but you pay for it at the pumps - 18 mpg on a good day. But the Octy is a bit of a sleeper - me likes!

On the 1.5mile straight the VRS made 119mph early in the day but only 116mph in the 30degree heat at the end

These current high temperatures are definitely taking a hit on performance. Definitely felt more sluggish after the 116mph run as well - i assume heatsoak.

For comparison the 993tt made 183mph

It's a bit like comparing a top premiership footballer to a lower league championship footballer.

The premiership guy cost a lot to buy, costs a lot to run, when he gets injured it's headline news and expensive, he requires the finest of care and attention to maintain his performance as well as the sacrifice of practicallity as he works best in a certain position and when he chokes it really does show.

The Championship guy costs a reasonable amount and his wages are realistic.

He is less fussy about the care and attention to fetter his ego as he is well aware that he is there to do a job. He is also more flexible knowing his position in the team could be effected by him adapting to different roles. If he gets hurt, it's down the NHS and he is replaced by another just like him. If he gets it wrong, it's not the end of the world, it's lower level championship.

Give me the Championship guy any day.

You can trust him...

Probably getting it rolling gently before applying full power in order to preserve his tyres ;)

Tell me about it - last week I was on a track at the same time as some Ariel Atoms :Yikes:

:rofl::rofl:

You should maybe change gear earlier.. the fabia should have whooped that 993 :D

Oh now, look at that. I dont know how the Fabia lost - you were so close

Pah, was barely anything in it! ;)

Great couple of vids. I liked the 2 porsche one - what's the spec of the silver one?

what's the spec of the silver one?

450 bhp / 457 lbft

11.8 sec quarter mile

3.6 0-60mph

The silver one is a standard 996TT X50 so 450BHP. Hence even though it gets the jump on the 993 it is soon reeled back in.

Full video from the day: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7958719648622453926

The Gaffa tape modifications are due to the centre section of the front splitter jettisoning itself at 180mph

Would have been a different story from a rolling start, in-gear or uphill though ;)

Or if the Porsche drivers were actually awake when the Fabia set off :D

But was he trying ? You should have been able to "see the expression on his face through the rear view mirror" ;)

Through it because he would be in front of you or in it cos he was behind you?

Oh and I think you did actually mean through :D

And yes, he was trying

Trying to stop laughing that you thought you were quicker?

Trying to stay awake?

Trying to see if he could go from 0-183 in 5th?

Regards,

Confused of the NEC

Atoms you say... Let me know if you see a black and orange one ;)

are you joking you beat him in 1st, 2nd, 3rd . i've never heard anything so ridiculous in my life!!

Hahaha... He let me go first and played with me till 3rd gear - see the video. I'm under no illusion that if he had tried and hooked it up i wouldn't have seen which way he went. 4WD and that amount of power it would probably hit 100mph before the VRS made 60

So no the fabia didn't beat him - not at any point, any gear, anything except mpg - sorry to disappoint

Don't get me wrong i'm not knocking the VRS - i think it's a great little car for what it is. Just wanted to illustrate the difference in performance between it and some serious machinery.

Maybe i should edit the thread title - Embarrassing (For the Fabia) is what i meant

I have been in the 993 and driven it on numerous occasions just hadn't expected it to rocket past the VRS quite like it does on the clip

if it was an old one then i think it would be close but an 04 onwards should whoop you, 218bhp and 500Nm

Stunningly fast car... Great vids...!

Were you really trying in that first vid or were you just 'sort-of trying';)?

If that was a full-bore start from the Fabia then that Porsche is rather fast:eek:

If you'd done the Pikey Mods you'd have had him, I reckon ;)

I'm gutted. I was always under the impression that the vRS was a thinly disguise rocketship that was faster than almost any brisk saloon or sports coupe (-In the mid-range), at least in the hands of an Uber-skilled Briskoda owner. ;)
