(Android) head unit replacement for 2014 Octavia

Featured Replies

Hi, this is my first post, despite being registered since 2012.  I had a 2001 Fabia back then.

I now have a 2014 Octavia and have been looking into replacing the head unit for one that primarily supports carplay/android auto. While also having Android would certainly also be a plus.

however what I keep seeing is the loss of car specific functions.  Steering wheel controls seem to be no issues.  Accessing care settings can work, but depends on the head unit?  But what seems to always be lost is the TMPS reset function.

some ODB dongles could resolve that. but from what I have read it could be more than just clearing usual fault codes.  ODBeleven seems to offer that feature.  however it is unclear if any kind of additional plan is needed for this.  I'd rather not have to spend X-credits every time I inflate my tyres.

So my basic questions for the head unit are:

  • Can I reset TMPS warnings with any old ODB dongle, or do I need a specific one? And do I need to spend extra money on top of that to have that option other than just the dongle?

  • what android head unit could be recommended?  I have looked a lot from TEYES, Joying, Dasatia, Idoing, TAFFIO, DYNAVIN.  None seem to stand out other than some running old versions of android, everything being optional (ODB, DAB+, carplay etc. and even the android play store) All I would really like is:
    • Android 12 with store or ability to sideload apps
    • Carplay/Android Auto
    • steering wheel controls
    • car info and settings
    • TMPS reset option (via a dongle would be OK too)

Another option would be to get one of those Carplay/Android Auto adapter boxes that integrate with the original infotainment screen. Such as from EBILAEN.  However the screen in my car is on the small side and a larger would would be nice.

As I understand it, if I still have a MIB1 upgrading just the screen is not easy and requires changing the MIB1 for an MIB2 or higher. this would starting getting very expensive, very fast. I definitely do no have the Columbus screen. But I do have a unit that sits in the glove box with two SD card lots.

obviously upgrading to MIB2 would give me carplay/Android Auto as well. While also keeping all car features functional, right?

What would you recommend as the best option in this case?  A new car? 😄

Hello,

This has being discussed multiple times.

All the android head units will give you headaches.

Most annoying us horrible call quality.

Go foe the mib2 upgrade with a wireless android auto dongle and you will be good to go.

It is more expensive but worth it.

I went through 3 Android units before upgrading to mib2
