VED/£40k

Featured Replies

Hi, apologies if this has been asked several times before! I thought the 1.5 petrol SE L I just ordered would be subject to the additional road tax, however Parkers table online says no (I don't know when the price crept above 40000 so might have been true in the past?)

Also, my OTR price on the invoice is under 40000, but am I right that this doesn't matter, it's based on brochure price?

Car should be here mid Sept, can't wait!

Hi, can't delete post above but hopefully helpful to any one else searching for an answer...I've had a proper look at figures and see that the OTR price is inclusive of discounts on the order form so I shall be paying extra car tax!

I do think it should have been uprated with inflation since inception, 40k isn't a lot these days!

There is a new government and a budget coming with a new Chancellor.

Maybe there will be changes for the future announced. Maybe higher OTR for EV,s  & worse taxing of ICE vehicles.

Yeah, no. They might bring the ban on new ICE cars to 2030, but there’s no way in hell this government will reduce taxation on new cars - if anything they will raise it.

I have just colllected a 1.5tsi SE L Kodiaq and it WILL break the £40k barrier.

Cheers. I had thought about a Merc eqb to offset the VED, however it was too small.

The new kodiaq looked huge in the showroom!

@gocitigo did you not consider an Enyaq?

@Ootohere I was looking at 7 seaters only

That is the Kia EV9 then. £65,000 starting price though.

The eqb was £50k with 0% APR and 2 free services, however they would not budge one pound from their mercedes 'agency' price and  I wasn't allowed to buy it my wife preferred the new Kodiaq to replace our current model!

I don't think the agency model bodes well for VAG 😞

They will be getting desperate to get EV,s first registered before the end of the year if not meeting the 22% that they and their partners need to have, or they will be getting fined £15,000 for cars sold / first registered.  Unless they ration the ICE vehicles to get to where they need to be.  That might result in pre reg cars, lots of pre reg EV,s.  But then they need to get new ones punted again next year, and year on year more and more.

Based on list price at date of registration, not the date of the order.

So if the list price increases before registration, VED will be based on the new price.

Not sure if it's equally as ugly as it's electric only brother or even uglier.

When in a car you do not see how it looks unless looking at its reflection in big windows or you see others going along the road.

You and others see it parked in the drive though!  😀

The huge hike in VED for a >£40k car is ridiculous IMHO. Even a Honda Civic with a few options ticked will exceed this threshold and that is NOT a "luxury" car by any standards in my book. I still think that the fairest way is to keep VED the same for all and just add a few pennies to the price of fuel. Then it's pay-as-you-drive and thirstier cars and high-milers then pay more, isn't that better?

The Santa Fe looks hideous and performance is gutless too. Am I biased in saying that the Kodiaq MK2 is the best looking and best value medium SUV available?

Sorry. Best looking goes to the Macan S - dark blue with black interior and papaya stitching. Obviusly the value aspect is missing a little though!

I quite like a Tiguan or GLC too, but for me it would have to be a Macan, X3 or Formentor (bonus points for hot ones - ABT or AC Schnitzer). Santa Fe has good indicators at the front!

I agree with you on the Macan, a friend had the 3.0L Turbo before his current Range Rover, which was been a lemon from day one.

Yes - I wouldn't get any JLR product. I've had too many friends have issues with all of them, some being annoying problems and some being catastrophic failures.

For the money they ask, I'd rather spec up something else. Mind you, money is an interesting topic. For the price of a brand new Audi A1, I could have bought my 2020 vRS (now on 40k miles), and still have enough money left over to push it comfortably past 400bhp.

Not that anyone does buy them anymore, but I have to question who signs on the dotted lines.

I'm sorry but nothing recent from BMW is anything other than painfully ugly.

Granted, that is a G01 X3M, so 2017-2024. I quite like them, and most of the M cars, 1 series, etc.

The new stuff, I agree, is gopping. I've no idea what they've done.
