DQ381 gear changes

Hello guys,

have been looking for information all over the internet, but have not found the right answer yet.

So I have Skoda Superb, 2021, 2.0tdi, 4x4, DQ381.

it has 85k km.

the problem that I have encountered is gear changes from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th. The thing is that you can feel them, you have like a small movement right when the gear is changed. Its not always and not connected if gearbox is warmed up or not. I have driven several DQ381 and didnt had such issues. All the gears should change smoothly. All other are, but these ones time to time are “jerky”. The feeling is like the clutch is engaging in that moment. More felt when drive slowly.

To be sure I have changed oil and filter (no adaptation), no change. I still have warranty and dealer drove with the car and said - all is fine. I have seen several posts about this very same thing in several forums, but there are no clear answer.

P.S im not from the UK but Eastern Europe

Just so we understand what you have done, you did a service on the gearbox or engine?  If gearbox then there is a process you need to follow with VCDS (or similar) to empty out the system and the new oil to refill the system.  Doing an oil change on the gearbox with no diagnostic help will not really anything other than refresh a bit of the oil.

I have changed the transmission oil and filter. Dealer has done it, so I guess they have followed the procedure. Thus they have not done transmission adaptation, as it is not required when oil is changed.

@Krisb23 Welcome to the forum.

Did you decide that it was best to have the DQ381 DSG serviced early @ 53,000 miles and not wait until 80,000 miles 128,000 km?

Best get the car back to who did the service after speaking to the boss and telling them of the issues and finding out if the service was correctly done.

Thanks ;)

yes, it was my decision. Had several suggestions to keep the service intervals shorter. The thing with sometimes jerky/felt switch was already before. I was thinking that it could improve after the change. But it didnt.

I will go back to dealer and ask them to seek for solution, but as I have read a lot about this in other forums so thought that maybe there is some direction on which to look.

Main problem - is hard to reproduce as its not happening doing some specifics. Its just happening time to time, mostly when driving calm.

Also here I have been recommended to shorten the intervals, and I do believe 80k mi is a bit too much for me for an auto trans, regardless of how advanced the DSG might be.

I have the same occasional jerkiness in the same gears, up or down, and especially when in manual. Sometimes I think is a matter of torque interruption, and I try to stay off the gas when I shift, but it does it anyway. I got half of the kms of the OP here. Will ask the dealer to look into it, but since is not a permanent issue ...

I had the same on my 2018 2.0tdi 4x4. Changed the DSG oil and filter = small improvement. Did the clutch adaptation with VCDS = huge improvement. Basically the car felt completely different after this. The adaptation is a must at some point more or less, as the disc packs wear over time.

I hear a lot of people have been affected. Was at the dealer and they said that without proof they cannot do anything.. they need some proof so that factory would compensate the guarantee fix - video, error msg or smth. Lets see, will try to push them to make adaptation.

this is really hard to report, as you can only feel it basically.

Is the adaptation something VCDS could do "safely"?

Yes it is. You can find more info from RossTech forum of this. I would say, that this procedure is part of "proper" maintenance of the gearbox along with fluid and filter change.

And there is no harm of changing the oil before the manufacturers recommended interval of 80.000 something miles, quite the opposite.

No harm in doing early. When done correctly for a DQ381.  The procedure followed and the oil to the correct temp and run through the gears etc.  plenty videos on the correct procedure.  Sadly too many do as with a DQ250.  Totally different.   PS.  It is sad just how many are having issues with DQ381 and MCU failures.  VW group as they did with DQ200,s are still head in the sand and costing many owners lots of hassle and money after the vehicles are out of the Manufacturers Warranty. And time without their car while in warranty.
