Overheating and coolant level high

Featured Replies

Hey,

I got an overheating symbol and when I looked I saw the coolant reservoir was nearly full..

Someone knows what it could be?

I started the car and at idle I noticed that the coolant is normal unless I open the cap of the expansion tank/cooling reservoir and then the coolant start to go up and boil is it normal?

Are the radiator cap and the expansion tank/coolant reservoir cap the same?

Thanks

Don't open it when it's hot, only when it's cold!

Check the level when it's cold, if the level goes up when hot then you need a new thermostat, housing and gasket.

Someone told me it may be only the radiator cap or the thermostat, isn't it?

Perfectly normal, because opening the expansion chamber cap on a hot engine relieves the pressure on the cooling system and drops the boiling point from ~115C to 100C. So don't do it!

Is it necessarily the head gasket or did you mean gasket for the thermostat?

Thermostat, the 1.4 16V engine doesn't blow head gaskets.

Thanks for your answer! Is it a fairly easy job?

Access is pretty tight but it's only three bolts from memory.
