Load noise from engine

Featured Replies

Hi, anyone got an educated guess at what may be the likely problem?

The oil pressure warning has been on for while but an oil change with the filter and sensor didn’t fix it.

I have a visit scheduled for the 29/10 but can advise if this is drivable of 15km to the Skoda garage or better to get it towed?

Cheers, Steve

How long has vehicle been driven with oil pressure warning light - is this the red warning indicator - or the yellow one?

Was oil level correct before it was changed?

There is a very strong likelihood of serious engine damage if oil pressure failure warning was ignored.

Hi, its the red warning light with the correct oil level when it first occurred. It hasn’t been driven far only some really short distances and slowly but has got worse and on Friday suddenly something seemed to break. I haven’t turned it over since as want to give the best chance of getting out of an underground garage with a steep exit slope and onto a tow truck. May be that’s the safest option now given that Skoda is not nearby with high risk of damage or breakdown.

I rather fear the damage has already occurred.

Serious damage to connecting rod bearings (probably the knocking sound on your audio file) will be almost immediate once oil pressure is lost.

Thanks. Is that expensive to fix

what would be your estimate or worse case cost ?

It depends on how long engine was operated with no oil pressure - if crank and conrod bearings have 'run' I would imagine a complete engine rebuild (top & bottom) - or replacement engine would be required!

The cause of the loss of oil pressure (possible oil pump failure?) would also need to be investigated. Repair cost could well be close to being uneconomic.

What is the mileage?

100,000km. Doesn’t sound good 😟🤞🏻

Just made a quote online for a second hand engine and the cost was 6500 euros just for the part. Labour costs would be extra and Skoda is not the cheapest for that so you could be right. I just hope it’s not that bad and just a broken oil pump.

If it was really bad I would have expected the temp to rise and a loss of power which is not the case. It’s not been driven far in the current condition but I will ask for tow to Skoda. Really makes me question though the reliability as most Octavia’s should be good for 250,000 km. With only 100K on the clock my car would be nearly new in Slovakia 🇸🇰 My car is not heavily used and has been well maintained. I was going to buy another VRS but considering other options now.

Bad news after investigation by Skoda. Needs a new motor and turbo at a cost of 8000 and 2000 euros each for the parts alone with a total repair cost of 17,200 euros. As that's more than the value of the car I will replace instead. Very costly though as lost a lot of value planned for the original trade-in 😒 Don't think that this problem should happen after only 100,000 km on the clock as they should normally last 3x times longer. Had no support from Skoda though as the garage stated its recorded that the car was driven 34 km after the red warning to stop driving appeared. To be honest I drove further than that as no other bad symptoms like overheating of power loss. I assumed a false alarm like I had similar but orange. Still lesson learned that if you are instructed to stop you need to at the next safest point otherwise you risk to be responsible for the damage with void warranty. Unless you know how to reset the recorded data? How much do you think the car is worth without fixing ?? Octavia 2.0 TSI 245ch - RS "Moon White" - 100,000km

An extremely expensive experience.

No engine should ever be run if an oil pressure fault is indicated and no fault warning should ever be ignored.

Serious damage will result from running, even for only a very short distance.

Yep lesson learned.

Yep, that was rod knock. In the words of Mat Armstrong - engine very bad. The assumption should always be that you can drive unless something comes up on the dash. If something does, stop immediately - especially if it's temperature or oil related. While unlikely, a decent blown turbo/oil leak does make quite a big fire risk.

The EA888.3 is a very reliable engine. It can have therm/pump/PCV issues, as well as a pretty high oil consumption, but generally it's a very good engine.

Did Skoda say what happended? From what you've said, it sounds like oil starvation (clogged filter, blocked pickup, lack of regular changes), pump failure, PCV issues or the turbo shi***** itself.

Value wise - £4000-5000? Depends if you'll break it or sell it as is.

No Skoda only mentioned that they suspect the engine was damaged due to incorrect oil distribution. They didn't say or show me exactly where the damage was. Regarding the price yes this is what I had in mind around 6000 euros. If I get that sum or close to it I will purchase a 3rd VRS if not then its time to downsize as Ill be 20K out of pocket. We'll see how it turns out.

If you're downsizing, I would take a look at a Leon FR. You can get a nice DSG 1.8 with 180ish bhp. Not quite a vRS but...

  • Author

Thanks will take a look. If you or anyone else has some other suggestions I’m interested. I will need to check the extra Malus tax as the 180bhp can be high. 3300 for the VRS compared to 28000+ for the Ford Focus ST at 183bhp. The VRS was a good deal for 265bhp.

180bhp wouldn’t be bad in fact was getting mixed up with the CO2 tax. All I can find for a Leon FR though in France is 1.5 eHybrid 204 ch (152 KW). I don’t have any electric charging option where I live currently. Added the CO2 tax for 2024 which at the moment will also be applied in 2025 as well as it was rejected by the government before the recent turmoil so there is a risk that it may be changed before the delivery date for any new orders arriving next year. What’s the tax like in the UK for the 156 VRS? I also added a similar resale price that I found with same kms but newer. I may have found someone interested as well as this could be a nice project for someone that can change an engine.
