Heater Settings/Air Conditioning

Featured Replies

Hi,

can somebody explain please:-

Does the air con when on ,work with the heater temp setting control.? So if I set the temperature control to 22 degrees ,the air conditioning cools the inside of the car until this temperature is reached ,turns off,and will turn itself back on when the car inside temperature rises above 22 degrees? Or does the air con when on keep working flat out until I switch it off?

On the Fab it has kind of basic climate control, so as far as I know, it would try to maintain 22 degrees. How accurate it is, I don't know. But if it gets too cold it should stop cooling.

My understanding is that air will always be drawn into the cabin at the speed of the fans and the temperature flap will constantly adjust the ratio of hot/cold air in the mix to try and keep the cabin at the desired temperature. If you switch the temp control from very hot to very cold, the air is instantly cold so I suspect the air con is always running, but could be wrong :D

So the numbers on the temperature dial do actually set the temperature??

So if you set it to 18C on a frosty morning you'll get hot air until the cabin reaches roughly 18C??

I thought it just pumped air out at the set temperature. If it changed temperature that's what climate control does.

I think it is (manual) climate control, ie it can adjust the temperature of the air entering the cabin, but can't adjust the vents it uses or the power of the fan to automatically control the cabin temperature :D

Having removed the heater fascia recently, there's a vented area I assume is a thermometer, to the right of the aircon switch, in the gridded area.

If that's the case, it's measuring air temp. of the cabin but in the vicinity of the fascia.

Yep. Then it'll blow slightly warm air to maintain 18C.

The Fabia has what VAG now call Climatic which is temperature regulation with a sensor near the AC button. The blower speed, direction and AC are controlled manually. The full digital controlled Climatronic as fitted to other VAG cars (Golf MKIV, Octavia etc) has three temperature sensors (Climatronic panel, dash top and up near the interior light) for more accuracy, plus full control over the blower and direction.

The Climatic is a nice feature and is accurate enough for me. I just usually set it to 19C and then turn the AC on when needed. Passengers tend not to understand and start whingeing at me for having the heating on in summer!

And on the newer climatic sytems they have done away with the a/c button. So you just set the temp you want and if required it brings the a/c on.

So what happens in the winter when you want the AC to demist but also want hot/warm air out the vents??

You use the aircon as normal.

The graph below shows that the aircon doesn't make the air much colder, but it is much drier. This encourages sweat to evaporate and makes us feel colder. (When the aircon is turned on the temperature drops by 2 degrees - not much -, but the humidity drops 10% - which is a lot)

I was refering to what Lummox said about the new climatic not having an AC button, therefore you can't turn it on your self... ;)

@Neily03 - good point that, does the new system notice the amount of moisture and adjust accordingly?

My aircon is usually left running, although if I'm stuck in a traffic jam I often turn it off and drop windows/open sunroof until we start going > 30 mph again :)
