Diesel judder

Featured Replies

I posted a couple of weeks ago about an occasional judder my Superb has developed. It’s a 2.0l diesel auto. Getting occasional juddering / loss of power while driving. Comes and goes. No warning lights or other symptoms.

Had to call out a mobile mechanic as I was away. He reckoned it was a lose oil filler cap, I’d topped the oil up and hadn’t clicked it shut. This was allowing air into the system and confusing the engine management.

Clicked it back up and mainly ok but now getting the issue back. It’s been serviced in the meantime (non Skoda dealer) and no obd errors showing.

I did notice yesterday when on cruise control on the motorway it was showing 90+ average mpg (which it obviously wasn’t doing).

Any ideas?

I've been having the same problem, with a 2.0 tdi, 2016 model

The fix is to replace the crankshaft position sensor, which is a bit tricky on mine. If you're going to do it yourself buy only a genuine sensor, as my replacement aftermarket version was worse than the original, the engine wouldn't rev over 3000rpm

Bump and update. Still getting judders but also noticed that on a long steady motorway run , there were times when I wasn’t getting any judders but mpg on dashboard display was showing 95mpg+ (if only) and seemed underpowered (might have been imaging). Also had a few occasions that engine, from standstill, has petered out needing manual restart. Now has stage 1 remap with egr delete. All seemed very well but now having repeats. Up until yesterday I had no dash lights (and no obd errors) but after a cutout and juddering pretty much every assistance system and glow plug symbols flashed up. Stoped and restarted but had a couple of stop/start errors showing. Could the issues be something to do with stop/start? I have noticed that when it is acting up, the stop/start doesn’t seem to activate when I’d expect it to and the we tickover is at around 1000rpm not the normal 800rpm. Any thoughts?

How old is the battery? Sounds like it could be on the way out.

Possibly the battery.

Turn off or disable stop/start and then see what happens ?

Unfortunately that will not make any difference - as suggested above, get the battery tested first. I assume this 'shuddering' is while engine is running in gear - not while shutting down?

It’s while driving

I mentioned the battery as a possibility because it wasn't clear when this fault happens. If the engine is running, and given the fact you can run the car without a battery, then it won't be battery related if the fault occurs while driving, except if stop-start is working. Although I notice my car's stop start only works when the battery has enough charge, for obvious reasons

When my car judders, i get errors, a combination of  tyre pressure error, ESC not available error,, stop-start not available.

No OBD error is recorded ,turning off the engine to reset returns everything to normal

But on one occasion I got a hard fault, plugged in the OBD reader to find P0322

Crank position sensor is faulty

Hi I get a constant judder when I leave my car on but it's only just started

What engine - TDI or TSI?

Get the ECU checked for any recorded faults (DTCs)

Check the battery.

'Juddering' could be misfiring - possibly caused by faulty injectors - or failing engine mounts allowing excess engine movement.

2.0 tdi crlb engine and the battery is fairly new

I bet on the clogged DPF

@Nab93 Any issue is related to your TDI,s very excessive oil use.

The diagnosis needs done by a qualified and competent technician or mechanic.

You were speaking about the oil pump yesterday.

Something is very wrong with your engine. It runs on Heavy Oil / Derv and Engine oil it seems.

I had same fault/symptom late 2024 and there were 2 possibilities crankshaft sensor or oil pressure sensor. There was a code for oil sensor (sorry cant remember code#), so decided to change both and immediately fixed problem, Cost only £175 parts were about £130 and my garage charged £45 for labour. Hope this help, oil sensor was most expensive dont be tempted buying a cheapy it will fail quickly.
