Coolant level sensor not working - replacement impossible to find?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

For months now my 2013 Yeti has been losing coolant slowly. Enough that I have to top it up from time to time, but nothing that's needed immediately fixing. What I have noticed is that I never get a dashboard warning when the coolant level is even far below minimum! So, I imagine I need a new coolant level sensor one the expansion tank.

But, why can I seemingly not find a part number anywhere? I don't know if I'm being dumb, but seemingly none of the usual "car part" online shops show any kind of coolant level sensor for a 2013 Yeti...I don't understand.

Can anyone shed any light? I've been trying to trawl through online wiring diagrams / part number catalogs to try and track it down.

It's built into the expansion tank, so you just replace that if you have ruled out wiring faults.

Do you get a warning if you run engine with it unplugged?

AFAIK the coolant level sensor is not available as a separate item, you will need to replace the complete expansion tank (OEM replacements are very reasonably priced)

You could try gently scraping the sensor probes to clean them - there has been a previous post where this worked, although if your existing tank has the 'Mit Silicat' bag still inside it, I would advise replacement.

Yes I get a dash warning with the sensor unplugged, suggesting the sensor itself is to blame vs. other wiring faults. I cleaned the terminals too just "because" (although they don't show any signs of corrosion at all) and will wait until the level drops again to see if the sensor has magically come back to life.

If not, then looks like a new expansion tank jobbie

I'd be more concerned about where the coolant was going.

I not only endorse Warrior193's suggestion that if it says 'Mit Silicat' replace it but go further and say do it NOW.
