Well, I sold up in the UK which included my trusty Mk2 Superb estate sadly. Moved to Spain with my job, best day’s work I ever did to be honest. But still lurking here cos it’s about the best VAG related forum in the world. The FB groups just don’t do it for me.


Bought a LHD car to get us all here (3 adults and 4 dogs) which is an Audi A4 Avant, 1.9 pd automatic. Did us really proud to be honest, from the UK Midlands to the south of Murcia region in Spain in 32 hours with no issues. I only gave 3 grand for it which seems a lot in the UK but it’s cheap for a Spanish car and it saved me over 4 grand in flights for us and the dogs with the added bonus of having a car when we got here. And it’s rust free, kinda rare for a 2004 Audi.

 

It is, of course, the CVT transmission made by LUK which seems unique to Audi. The rest of the VAG group in that era seemed to use a ZF auto which are a bit more reliable LOL. That’s one of the reasons I hang around here, for all the great technical info. Anyway, it might be an Audi but it’s still VAG so hope you don’t mind.

I left my 7 seater Alhambra in the UK when I moved to France because the Octavia came up at a price I could not refuse 24 hours before, I had to do a load of repacking but was amazed at just how much it swallowed.

 

Anyway I sold it on Autotrader or whatever it was back then, my neighbour handled the viewings so I didn't see the purchaser but was informed it was a Polish (I think) guy who wanted to take his extended family on their first ever trip back to Poland (or wherever) the car and fuel for the trip was a considerable saving over the air fares so was effectively free, I was chuffed that someone would get good use out of it.

Acquired a similar vehicle myself recently,  a 2007 and manual transmission but otherwise equivalent. 

Liking it so far, but lots to learn.

Yeah, the manuals are a better bet, or the Quattro version in auto had a ZF box. The CVT is unique to FWD with longitudinal engines and really isn’t a great transmission. Audi discontinued it in 2014 in favour of the DSG things, which are just as bad in my view. The ZF slush boxes are much more home mechanic friendly, I’ve done a few 6HP26’s in Discovery 3’a and, while tedious, are not difficult. Same thing with Borg Warner ones.

What I am finding in Spain is that people actually service the transmissions which is not common in the UK. One guy in the Audi Spain FB group has 300k kms on his CVT but he changes the oil and filter every 60k kms. I mean, Jeez, cars over here do starship mileages. 500k kms isn’t uncommon, some as high as 800k. That’s half a million miles.

In the VAG lineup it is predominantly SEAT over here, understandably as they’re built in Spain. Skoda are very thin on the ground, lots more VW Passats than Skoda Superbs. Audi is seen as a rich man’s choice, but in reality the Spanish have a love affair with French stuff for some strange reason. Probably because they’re cheap, making Audi look positively expensive LOL. But given the choice of a Peugeot 3008 or an Audi - any Audi, well, that’s enough said LOL.

Nerd point - the only Quattro is THE Quattro, all other AWD/4WD Audis are badged quattro.

Worth referring to the 'multitronic' since that is what the VW Group did. 

 (Then the s-tronic which is a DSG or not a DSG. Audi like being different..)   VW Group Tiptronics, Roomster, Porsche as well, then PDK. !
